viral dermatitis

my 14 month old has always had red dry patches on his lower legs...now they have spread up his legs to his arms and onto his cheeks..my doc says its not eczema (its ntot in his creases) but viral dermatitis and I shouldn't put anything on it and it will go away..but it has got worse since we went to the docs...I have been searching on the internet but it seems viral dermatitis could be a name for eczema. I have started putting Oilatum on him twice a day and keeping his baths cooler than normal (an eczema relief treatment) and the flare ups do seem to be lessening. He is not itchy though....is my doctor wrong? Could it be related to his cradle cap (this cleared up after a few months)
