It's the oldest son of the school mum who came to my rescue when I was in labour!

They seem to have caught it early and his treatment is working well. His 2 younger brothers have been treated as a precaution too.

I'm going to send him a parcel of goodies, he's got to saty in for anotehr week yet. I'll send her some stuff too.....

We got a letter home on friday saying a pupil had been addmitted to hospital with it, and a leaflet with info on meningitus. Apparently the risk of catching it is very very small....but I'm pretty scared all thesame.

omg, I saw that yesterday and thought of you. Scary

foundintranslation · 28/01/2007 13:57

Oh goodness, how scary for the poor family, and for you.
IIRC bacterial meningitis is not very easy to catch through normal everyday contact. If you're still worried, though, maybe ask your GP?

filthymindedvixen · 28/01/2007 14:01

Just to reassure you LTH, the risk is infintesimal to you (but it's natural to be worried)
when ds had it, the only people they treated were those of us who had been in the house with him overnight during the previous 48 hours.

If you have any qurestions or worries, these people are fantastic and it's a free 24-hour helpline
here

Really hope your friend's little boy will be OK, it's a terrifying illness.

LadyTophamHatt · 28/01/2007 14:10

I phoned her this morning, I didn't know it was her Ds but I just put 2+2 together when it said a 5yr old boy because they weren't at school on friday.

Her Dh called back a while ago. They all very worried, naturally. He's making a good recovery and his tempreature is back to normal and has been for 2 days. The anti-biotics aren't very nice though apparently....

I feel awful for feeling so worried about my ds's when they are right in the midst of it all

ohh, my ds was 4 when he had it.
it sounds like they've caught it in good time (ds made a full recovery). Some of the procedures are horrible (Lumbar puncture ) but my ds can't remember any of the bad stuff, only the fact that when he was feeling better, they had a Thomas the Tank engine food trolley in the childrens ward and he got to watch a lot of videos (as he was kept in isolation from other kids on the ward for a while)

Please tell your friend about the helpline - they kept me sane both at the time and in the aftermath. There were so many things I worried about which the hospital couldn't tell me etc and I felt very isolated as no-one else I knew had ever had any dealings with meningitis.

LadyTophamHatt · 28/01/2007 14:54

Sadly, I suspect she knows about he helpline, FMV because her DH told me that she lost a young cousin to it about 5 yrs ago....
