Slipped disc

Well after backache for the last 10 years (after fracturing a lumbar vertebra), I had an MRI 2 weeks ago. Just seen the consultant who says the scan shows I have a slipped disc.

Not sure if it happened at the same time I broke my back or not - but he says slipped discs are normally only painful for a couple of months, so not sure why mines been bad for years.

Anyway he's going to inject steroids via an epidural which will act as a painkiller for 6 months. But I've just looked on the NHS Best Treatment website and this steroid treatment is under the "Treatments That Probably Don't Work" heading!

Anyone else had it done? Or had a slipped disc and found somethign else that helped?

My Mum suffered from a slipped disc for years which gave her painful sciatica. She had the disc removed in the end, prob about 15 years ago now. It was a very long recovery (she was only in her mid 30's at the time) and a pretty awful op. Of course medicing moves on a lot in 15 years so the op may well be able to be done in a less invasive way nowadays. She still suffers from the sciatica.
