no I must admit I never did it

was just told to

Blandmum · 26/01/2007 14:47

Cranberry juice is good for it.

Water with some bicarpnate of soda is can help to neutralise the acidity of your urine (tastes nasty mind)

This sounds yuck but does work if you are in lots of discomfort. Drink loads, run the hottest bath you can. Sit in it , and when you need to pee, pee in the bath....horrid I know but it does make it easier and less painful. Do this for as long as you can, drinking more water all the time to help to 'flush out' the bateria that have caused the cystitis. At the end, have a shower!

I always found that drinking warm things helped

not tea and coffee obv

but otherwise I got really cold

get yourself a hot water bottle

DumbledoresGirl · 26/01/2007 14:48

Forget the self help remedies and the chemist, go to the GP. This can be so serious as I know to my cost.

Skribble · 26/01/2007 14:49

Mh I might try some hot juice or something, I don't have any bicarb or cranberry, stuck in house with no car .

You need to get to a chemist & doctor - do you have a friend who could take you? At the very least turn up the heating & make yourself 2 hot water bottles (one for your tummy, one between your legs)

I used to have 'interstitial cystitis' ie. I had it about every other month or so, and got 2 nasty kidney infections as a result. So I really sympathise!

Definitely get to GP if not improving after 24 hours - sometimes only antibiotics will shift it.
Also my homeopath recommended the following which worked better than anything besides antibiotics:-

  • put 1 handful pearl barley in pan, add 1 bunch parsley, 1 lemon cut into quarters, and tablespoon of manuka honey. Pour kettleful of boiling water over it. Leave to go tepid, strain & drink the tepid liquid frequently through the day. It's disgusting but it works
  • take homeopathic remedy Staphisargia 30c every hour from first onset of symptoms until completely recovered
  • cranberry juice doesn't have enough of the active antibacterial ingredients to make much difference - take cranberry capsules. Cysticare is a good one.

But you'll need to get to a chemist/shop to get all of this. Take care, cystitis is so miserable...

just drink lots of water and pee in the bath if its too bad.
Sometimes if its so bad you will need antibiotics so no getting away from the doctor, dont let it get to that point though, if it carries on go to your GP

Thanks it has eased off this evening, I am off to pick up DS from his club now that DH is home so I might leave early and go to the 24hr Tesco for supplies.

The key for me in stopping the cycle of recurrent cystitis was to (a) drink loads of water, and CRUCIALLY (b) to not pee more than once an hour, no matter how much you are bursting and in pain. To pass the time, paradoxically, just drink more water until the hour has passed. Peeing too often increases the irritation, and prevents a good flush when you do pee. A nurse in an emergency drop-in told me this and I put it into practice. I have not had a bad bout of cystitis since.

Thanks Isa I am holding my pees for an hour, I did go to work as it was fine last night but back with avengence this morning, so I got a lift home and I have cranberry tablets and cystitis sachets too. so drinking and flushing all day.
