Constipation after giving birth?

I had a c-section 5 weeks ago and ever since have been suffering with terrible constipation. Before this I was very regular so am wondering if having a baby has caused this....
Has anyone else experienced the same thing? I have had to take laxatives to get me moving but don't want this to be a long term solution. Don't have much faith in my G.P

I didn't have it as a chronic thing, but I did get one horrible acute episode about 10 days after the cs. I kid you not, I thought I was dying. The MW gave me a suppository in the end, and I was too much in pain to be embarassed at having somebody shove a pill up my rectum.

Have you been prescribed iron tablets by any chance? That was what caused mine. I would also recommend looking carefully at your diet - are you drinking enough? Are you eating lots of fibre? And I mean of the fruit and veg variety rather than the wholemeal bread type, which can be quite difficult to shift, IFKWIM. Tinned prunes are generally pretty effective. Also, in the short-term try senna or syrup of figs rather than the more hardcore laxatives. Or even a tin of prunes. (Nicer than they sound btw!)

Oh its so uncomfortable, I was constipated for 13 days, yes really 13 days after the birth of dd, I will spare you the details but with enough laxatives to sink a ship all was well. I'd recommend prune juice, absolutly disgusting but boy it works. Good luck.
