Normal Coil - anyone had any side effects?

Just wondering. I've had mine in for nearly a year and still get periods lasting between 10-14 days. Period cramps much more painful. Still no sexual desire and generally feel uncomfortable during sex.

6 months non-stop bleeding (couldn't get to docs as working on remote island) . The thing also used to spike ex during sex, but was aparently fitted correctly. Horrible horrible contraption.

tenbygirl · 25/01/2007 18:33

I had only a 2 day gap between periods, gp getting telling me to gove it a few months to see if it settled.

eNDED UP WITH PELVIC INFLAMMATORY DISEASE AS AN INFECTION HAD BEEN INTRODUCED AT fitting. (sorry about caps)

PoppiesMum · 25/01/2007 18:33

God, your experiences sound awful.
I've had mine for 9 months and have no side effect at all. Maybe I've just been lucky

Ahhh I went to nurse about getting a diaprgm and she started to try and talk me into getting one that stops your periods? Not sure if I want one now. She reckoned it was just what I needed...

blondehelen · 25/01/2007 21:40

made periods really heavy and I became anaemic. Put up with it for about 2 years. Then had it removed.

cece · 25/01/2007 21:41

Sounds awful - are these the ones with hormones in them?

burstingbug · 25/01/2007 21:43

I thought about having a coil, think i'm rather put off now!

VoluptuaGoodshag · 26/01/2007 08:45

The one I have is the normal coil, without the hormones. I can't take anything with hormones in as they give me migraines. Pill is out for that reason as is the Mirena coil. DH cannot use condoms. He was due to have the snip but cancelled (cold feet). Looks like it's no sex then!

Cece
My FPC also tried to hard sell me the coil - everytime I went in there.

First they tried to hard sell me the Mirena one, telling me it would stop my periods. So I tried the mini-pill first, to see how I'd do on progesten-based contraception, which the Mirena is.

SO glad I did! It was a 'mare!

Then they tried to hard sell me the copper coil when I asked to be fitted for a diaphragm.

I said NO b/c I don't like how it works and the idea of having some foreign body shoved up in me just puts me off.

Don't let them bully you! YOU know what is best for your body.

cece · 26/01/2007 21:40

Thanks expat - think it involves a bit of a hassle for them, as I think you have to go fro a fitting appointment and then a checking appointment don't you. I couldn't believe she was being so dissmissive of a diapragm She also told me it would stop my periods... which is the only thing that is tempting me!

ashoesandbagsbird · 26/01/2007 21:48

Had this one for 2 years and been ok up until last month. When I had only 14 days between periods and both were really heavy.

I am not too surprised as this happened with first coil which I eventually had taken out and then had ds.

Think i will have to send dh for a vasectomy in the next six months

wombat2 · 26/01/2007 22:00

I must have been lucky - normal coil, no side effects apart from slightly longer than normal periods (1-2 extra days) tailing on and off.

stitch · 26/01/2007 22:02

normal coil, only on itsy little side effect called pregnancy

wombat2 · 26/01/2007 22:04

oops!

NappiesGalore · 28/01/2007 16:40

i had a normal coil for 3 years. periods were seriously awful - intensely painful cramps.
i had it before i had babies tho, and that may have been a factor (uterus not stretched enough).

have a mirena now... jury's out on whether it is having any side effects but my periods are practically non-existant, which is nice enough...

manuka · 28/01/2007 19:07

I've just had a copper coil fitted and I'm bleeding a week before I'm due on. not heavy just annoying spotting. And dp felt it last time we had biblical knowledge of eachother! I hope it settles in and works cos I can't do the pill -makes me CROSS! and condoms are passion killers and diaphragm is too. God if I get pregnant that would be AWFUL HORRENDOUS TERRIBLE!!!!! Can't do all that again!
Did you have long periods before coil??

LostMe · 28/01/2007 19:19

I have Mirena coil fitted and bled for the best part of the last six months - it was awful. I think it has now settled down but am not sure of the side effects. I have little sex drive (but to be honest - no change there!) but do seem a tad moody!

MrsBee · 28/01/2007 19:27

I think the reason why your FPC tried to disuade you from having a diaphragm is because the method probably won't be available for much longer, so little is the demand for them. Only 1 manufacturer in the UK does the spermicide that you need to use with the diaphragm, and even that is now very hard to get hold of from suppliers.

alibag · 28/01/2007 19:44

I've a regular coil but have an appt next week to try to find some alternative - very heavy periods, still after a year and a half , periods at least two weeks duration, spotting during the next two weeks, bleeding after sex..... not quite the experience I was hoping for, but I didn't want to take hormones as I'd been on the pill for about 10 years in total before my two DS's. Not sure which way to go but might try to suggest a snip for DH (since he's the one so adamant that we will not go for a third!)

I have a normal coil. Heavier periods than before - really heavy for about 3 days then not too heavy for about 4 more. Apart from that it's OK. I tried prog only pill for a bit and felt dreadful - depressed and with zero sex drive, so I'm not going for any major hormone treatments.
