Tonsilitis-is it contagious? how long for?

DD1 is 4.6 and I was told by GP yesterday that she has tonsilitis. She had been feeling rough since Monday night, which I thought was just a cold, but when she said her thre=oat and ears were hurting I took her to the GP. They have given her antibiotics and calpol.

Can anyone tell me if she is contagious, if so for how long? I know health comes first, but basically it is her best friends birthday party on Sunday and I need to know if it will be safe for the other children if we go.

yes it's contagious, but the most contagious stage is the pre-sore throat sniffles and whining stage.

Once they've started the antibiotics the chances of passing it on go down rapidly - if she's feeling up for the party I'd let her go.

I didn't know it was contagious but I'm glad now that I kept my dd off school!! The doc told us on Monday that she had tonsilitis & I kept her off as she was hoarse & sore. She has just gone back today, looking bright & happy again, even though she still has some antibiotics left.

The thing is the most contagious bit is the coldy, whiny day or so before you make it to the docs - not much you can do about it though else they'd never make it to school at all.

Is an antibiotic always needed to clear up a bout? My dd is off today with it but isn't in as much pain as yesterday - and then I'd given her calpol. It's been 2 years since she had it before.
