infected umbilical stump

DD2 1 week has an infection in her umbilical stump, it looks as though it's due to fall off, but is all wet and a bit pussy (sp?!) and also a bit smelly. Went to GP yesterday who said to wash/wipe with cooled boiled water and apply antibiotic cream. Instinctively doesn;'t feel right to be keeping it moist. Any ideas?

My 3 week old had infected umbilica, I contacted the midwife who sent me to the GP who sent me to A&E and we had an instant course of antibiotics.
I would follow GP advice but check that there is no redness around the base of stump or spreading around his stomach.
Is he well in himself?

are you due to see your midwife soon? Usually a bit of silver nitrate sorts this out nicely.

i was told to get something called cord spirit which stopped the infection but also helped it to dry out.
