I'd appreciate some help with an essay i'm doing on GP's facilities, so if anyone can answer a few questions for me, i would be eternally grateful!

What city or county are you in?

Do you ever have trouble seeing your GP? (Can't get an appointment, doctor rushes you out etc)

Does your GP surgery have all the facilities you need?

Have you or your family ever gone to casualty because a doctor wasn't available at your surgery?

Overall, are you satisfied with your GP?

Any other comments?

Never. Even the receptionists are nice. Dr's very generous with their time. They have won awards for patient service.

Does your GP surgery have all the facilities you need?
Midwife, baby clinic, phlebotomist, health visitor, 2 nurses, 3 doctors, decent comfy waiting room with toys. Yes.

Have you or your family ever gone to casualty because a doctor wasn't available at your surgery?
Only out of hours.

Overall, are you satisfied with your GP?
Very. But my experience appears to be exception rather than the rule round here. Friend goes to surgery 3 doors down and it is a different story.

PersonalClown · 15/01/2007 20:52

Im in Herts
Can't get a regular appointment for weeks especially if you want a particular doctor.
The GP facilities are actually pretty good here. Not everything is needed though as the hospital is 10 minutes walk down the road!!!
Not to Casulty as such but the walk in clinic at the weekend because of horrible sinus infection.
I love our GPs. Been there for most of my life.
Can't be seen by ds' doctor for 4 weeks as she is very popular but she is the only one Ds trusts (He's ASD).

Yes, it is a highly equipped health centre.

Have you or your family ever gone to casualty because a doctor wasn't available at your surgery?
No

Overall, are you satisfied with your GP?
Very, although of course some GPs in the practice are preferable to others!

Any other comments?
When dh was suddenly ill, with no medical history, the receptionist who spoke to dh on phone got a GP round to our house with his notes in 10 minutes. She organized an ambulance, left me a written note (couldn't get me on the phone), locked up the house properly...
And this is an over-stretched inner city surgery.
When the chips are down, when it is life or death or major emergency, the NHS is fab which is why I hate to hear people who take the piss.

phonelines open at 8am for an appointment that day. at appointments are allocated by 8.10

whether you get an appointment much depends on how quicly you can redial.

Posey · 15/01/2007 21:04

Hope I made myself clear with the "take the piss" comment. By that I mean people who abuse the service, who attend A&E unnecessarily, don't keep out-patient appts, that sort of thing. Don't mean that people can't or shouldn't complain when things go wrong or care is bad.

Do you ever have trouble seeing your GP? (Can't get an appointment, doctor rushes you out etc)

No problems getting to see a doctor, my own GP requires perfect planning.

Does your GP surgery have all the facilities you need?....... Yes

Have you or your family ever gone to casualty because a doctor wasn't available at your surgery?.......... No

Overall, are you satisfied with your GP?

Extremely

Any other comments?

My GP is very very handsome, he is known locally as Dr Dishy, which may explain the struggle to see him.

no prblem seeing the gp

Dorset

No, never.

Yes. Could do with a phlebotomist more often.

No.

Extremely satisfied.

They have a very good triage system. If you need to see someone urgently and there are no appts the triage doctor phones you back within an hour. They assess whether you need to be seen or not and will see you that day, often practically immediately.

Own GP is also available for phone contact at the end of each morning surgery provided you have rung in by 11.30 am.

They have a great booking in system too where you can check yourself in using a touch screen thingy.

jennifersofia · 15/01/2007 21:12

London
Yes, all the time, to the point where I don't bother going (but I actually wasn't all that bothered before TBH)
I dunno - I guess so.
No - but we do use the walk-in service at the local hospital (walking distance) instead of our surgery because it is easier than making an appointment.
Not really - I don't find that they give me any useful advice that I don't know - but we (thank heavens) haven't ever had to go for anything serious. Also, we tend to see any old GP who is available rather than the same one every time. I have never met one I felt impressed enough with to go through the wait and the hassle of making an appt. specifically to see her/him.

What city or county are you in? Sheffield, South Yorkshire

Do you ever have trouble seeing your GP? Can normally get appointment within 3 or 4 days, not often on same day unless real emergency

Does your GP surgery have all the facilities you need?
Only has GPs and nurses, MW is par time, shred with another practise,

Have you or your family ever gone to casualty because a doctor wasn't available at your surgery?
Not casulty no. Have a drop in clinic at hospital which we have used

Overall, are you satisfied with your GP?
Yes

Any other comments?

SherlockLGJ · 15/01/2007 21:12

In fact...

I broke my toe over Christmas, (those of you in the know, stop sniggering at the back)

Walked around on it for two weeks before I gave in and went to the GP.

GP appointment 3.00 p.m

Local cottage hospital for X ray 3.30.

Seen within 30 minutes at minor injuries at nearest big hospital.

Back at friends house having a glass of wine and collecting DS at 5.15 p.m.

Pretty darned impressive. IMO

Seeing a doctor is not a problem. Seeing our (mine and DD's) is more of a problem as he's very busy and popular. We can see him, but it's likely to be two weeks down the line.

Does your GP surgery have all the facilities you need?
So far ... it's part of a complex of six surgeries, they share a phlebotomist etc.

Have you or your family ever gone to casualty because a doctor wasn't available at your surgery?
No.

Overall, are you satisfied with your GP?
Yes.

Any other comments?
I think my only issue with GP care overall is having to go through the palaver of getting an appointment and attending it (either taking time off work or dragging DD along with me) for the sake of some really straightforward query. I often wish I could email my doctor, but I can only imagine the amount of timewasting and nutters they'd get if that was introduced!

MerryMarigold · 15/01/2007 21:17

I am London, my Gp is in Waltham Forest. I have lots of trouble seeing my GP. You have to phone on the day at 8.30 to get an appointment for the FOLLOWING WEEK same day. If you phone at 9.00am they will not give you the next available appointment, you have to phone the next day for the next week. Also, you don't have a specific GP, so you can be allocated to any one of 6 GP's. I saw 5 different GP's in a few weeks for my baby son's eczema and each one said something different!

My surgery does have a nurse and a midwife, so that aspect is good in terms of vaccinations and I did not have to go to hospital for midwife appointments. I have gone to the walk-in centre twice because the doctor wasn't available. Overall, I am not satisfied at all. I stay there because one of the GP's (now retired) was absolutely fantastic with a chronic illness I have and occasionally she works, so I try to see her.

pianist · 15/01/2007 21:24

I live in Kent. My GP is great but she's only part-time, so the chances of me wanting to see a doctor on the day she's working aren't good. Normally it's about a week (minimum) before I can get an appointment. If it's something really urgent (it helps if you cry!) they will fit you in with a different doctor.

Haven't been to A&E rather than go to a doctor - would probably take LONGER than a week to get seen there.
