Teething - my god, please help

My DS has started teething, he is 6 months old and one of his teeth at the bottom has broken through.
He has been really quite poorly, has had a sweet smelling upset tummy for a week, is v.grumpy, off his food, and night time is a challenge. I am exhausted, after sleeping quite well and only waking once, he is up 3-4 times a night, for up to an hour, and then wakes at 5, often with a dirty nappy and then cries constantly and won't go back to sleep.
How long does this last? Is it normal??

2 years.

Yes.

Poor bubba, try some 'Teethas' powders that you pour into the babies mouth. Think my ds2 became quite addicted, they really seemed to help though.

Medised is a godsend. Really helped DD.

It's not constant for two years!
Calpol (or Medised, I can't remember if you can give that at 6mths) for him, gin for you.

Flumpybumpy · 15/01/2007 11:01

Medised is okay from 3mths. Calpol is good for suring the day but Medised has a sleepy ingredient which helps them sleep so best for night!

sleepy hope - I would be surprised if all those symptoms are caused by teething alone. Sounds to me like he has picked up one of the many bugs going round. If he has got a bug, then he'll feel his teeth even more.

Sympathies - my DD teethed from 4months to 2.5yo, couldn't have been constantly, but it sure felt like it!! Echo Medised and you can alternate it with baby Ibuprofen, so they have something every two hours. It is ALWAYS worse at night! I used to be awake from 12-3 every night as a matter of course. Good luck - it will pass.

bootsmonkey · 15/01/2007 11:05

Sorry belgo - but it sounds EXACTLY like teething to me. Especially the upset tum and stinky nappies!

belgo · 15/01/2007 11:07

bootsmonkey - I stand by what I said. We'll agree to disagree

Thanks for all your advice. Do the bottom teeth tend to come in pairs? What is generally the timescale for this, or am I being hopeful thinking there is one?
What about teething gels like Bonjela?

Anbesol liquid seems to help my ds - it seeps into the gum so think it might be a bit longer lasting than gels.

My ds is 7 months and has just had his first tooth break through - am at the thought of another 2 years of this... my mum says the first ones are the worst and then it gets easier but perhaps she's lying to make me feel better!
