spotting on merina after 12 years

I am on my second merina, I have never had any periods or spotting in this time, and my current merina is due to be replaced in August.
Today I have started spotting for the first time...a complete shock for me!
I have recently started a new relationship, and have never been so active as I am now, could this be the reason why I have spotting....or could it be anything else (std?)

Hi, I'm a practice nurse and although I don't give contraceptive advice I have heard the GPs telling patients that it's very common to bleed when a mirena is due for removal soon - might be wise to just check though as any abnormal bleeding should be assessed X
