Why were you prescribed antibiotics for a cold?

A cold is caused by a rhinovirus.

These are not cured or abated by antibiotics, which are only for bacterial infections.

Antibiotics won't help a cold - it's viral, and abs don't work with viral infections.

Our surgery is pretty clued up and won't prescribe ABs for viruses, rightly so! It just causes increasing AB resistance to other diseases in the general population.

You sure it was actually for the cold itself - agree, cold is usually viral so ab's don't help, it just has to run its course with symptomatic treatment. Perhaps they were for the secondary infection like sinusitis or throats ?

Oh, I've had to take ABs for sinus infection lots.

If you finish one lot and are still ill, you may need another.

Amoxycillin, for example, is no longer effective for me when I get sinus infection.

In that case, go back and see the GP again.

it is Co-Amoxiclav tabs contains Penicillin
