Diagnosed myself with uti - do I tell dr

Been feeling unwell for few weeks, nothing specific just utter fatigue and aching legs. A feeling of being a bit confused sometimes, but put that down to tiredness. Upped the vitamins and iron in hope it helped.

Had noticed when I urinated it had a really strong smell but put that down to vitamins maybe?

My dog has long term bladder issues and we are trying to make her urine more acidic. To this end I had bought some test strips online (human type!) to take daily samples for her and see if her medication is working.

So yeah I thought I would try one on me to see how they worked (plus it made me feel like I was in an episode of House or something!!). The leukocyte level on it was a day glo purple (so very high). Significant amounts of protein and some nitrates too.

I need the drs don't I? Do I tell them I've diagnosed myself? Or will they think I'm a bit of a nut job for that?

Take a sample into the GP ,they will need to test it to see which antibiotics will be effective .

Just go to the doctor. Please

Will have to try to get an appointment. Last time I had a three week wait (!) and was told my tiredness and feeling crapness was due to my anxiety and got offered anti depressants. Having had severe anaemia and vit d deficiency in past I thought it more likely to be that.

I hope you get an appointment, you should see someone in the next day or so. Do not wait three weeks.
I would take a specimen in a clean container (& maybe be prepared to do another one) and I would also explain you've dipped your urine & what it showed.
If the container of dipsticks is small enough you could take it with you so they can see in case the quantifies are different for an animal test.
Last time I did this (at work, not with animal ones!) I was in and out in two minutes. Hope you feel better soon Smile

"Will have to try to get an appointment."

No, you don't just try. You will make an appointment. If necessary you tell the receptionist that you need an emergency appointment because you suspect you have a urine infection. Do not wait three weeks.

Untreated urine infections can be dangerous and can cause kidney damage. See a doctor asap.

Just say 'I think I may have a UTI, had one before and it's familiar symptoms'

Strawberryshortcake40 · 11/05/2016 07:31

I have had them a lot before. But never with symptoms like this. I have a lot of pelvic pain anyway as I have adhesions on my bladder and saw a specialist for that a few years ago, so maybe that's why I didn't realise till now.

You've probably had the infection for a little while then. Go to gp.

I left infection once and it got so bad I had hallucinations among other bad symptoms.

Floralnomad · 11/05/2016 10:28

At our GP you can just drop a sample in and they phone you back if there is an issue , sample pots can be purchased at the chemist if you don't have something suitable .
