Went to GP with sore throat and got a 2wk urgent referral!!

Went along for a routine appointment to get a mole checked and get a prescription of some sort for the sore throat I've had for the past 3mths and got told I need an urgent referral!
The mole is of no concern apparently but my throat is.
I didn't really get what was going on at the time but now I'm a tad concerned lol.
The pain is on one side and in the ear also and apparently I have some whitening where I had the tonsil removed.
Naturally it's a bit of a shock, if anything I'd have expected a referral for the mole.
So now I'm waiting for the appointment and I've still got the sore throat lmao.
Anyone any similar experience?

Sore throat for 3 months? Longer than a week would have required an investigation.
Possibility of an abscess which extends down the side of the throat from the ear, or something more suspicious that needs investigation. Sometimes abscesses can start to erode the bone if left too long.
