Can someone talk to me about high blood pressure worries

Saw the dr yesterday for yet another uti and was shocked at my bp being 161/99. He didn't seem massively concerned and said to have it rechecked within a month.
I've checked on home bp monitor today and it's sitting around 150/90.
I'm in the process of losing some weight and have cut down smoking to a couple a day, I know this needs to be the first thing to stop.

What else can I do? My mum has been on bp medication since her early 50's. I'd really like to avoid medication.

Any tips please
