Mammogram on Wednesday - got home from work today to find letter calling me in for 5 hours of tests on Thursday

Talk me down from the ceiling please

And after breastfeeding for what seemed like bloody years and years too

It will be fine, I was recalled and they like to have another look then after photographing get a senior person to look,hence the time frame. Hth

Couldn't read and run but admit I have limited knowledge. However I suspect that calling you back is something that happens to many women and doesn't always mean our worst fear. I'm sure there is a wealth of experience somewhere on Mumsnet ready to reassure you/offer advice. Sending you an unmumsnetty hug.

I had this but it was fine. They gave me a different type of scan and just said my breast tissue was dense. However, I felt exactly like you do. I hope all goes well for you.

My friend went for her first routine mammogram (she's 47) and 2 days later got a phone call calling her back (panic panic).

She had to have lots of tests, took most of a day, including a biopsy - but the irregularity is nothing more than calcium deposits and she doesn't have to have any further treatment.

It's easy to say don't worry...I am a massive worrier! But most recalls are for nothing sinister.

Hi, this happened to me last Nov ( 4 weeks after my mum had died ). I felt the same as you. They did find a very very small lump which I had to have removed followed by radiotherapy and now on tamoxifen. I just wanted to tell you that even if cancer is diagnosed it's not necessarily going to be bad. This was my first mammogram, I'm 51. The lump was so small it could not be felt and the treatment I've had has been excellent. The worst I have felt has been fatigue during radiotherapy. Before the diagnosis I too was terrified but relieved once I knew as I knew what I was dealing with. I hope it is nothing in your case but just wanted you to know if it isn't it's not as bad as I'm sure you're imagining.

Don't panic! I have a huge family history of breast cancer and found a lump two weeks before Christmas. I had a mammogram, but it took the second radiographer with an ultrasound machine to tell that it was just a cyst, which he was able to drain there and then. You've probably not got my family history and also most lumps are benign anyway, so very likely nothing much anyway. Absolute worst case is that if you haven't even found a lump and it is something, it's very early and easily treatable,

Mammograms are notoriously difficult to read. Someone compared it to having to find a polar bear in the snow.

Thank you - rationally I know the odds are in my favour but in my job I talk to lots of cancer patients so my outlook is probably a bit skewed

The nurse is going to call me today to tell me why I've been called back and at least I don't have to wait too long (although I can read all sorts of bad things into that too ...)

When this happened to me, it was because the original mammogram was done in a mobile unit - analogue, not digital.

When I got to the specialist centre, I was told that I would have a diagnosis by the end of the afternoon. First, another mammogram on a state of the art machine. Then an ultrasound, where the doctor immediately told me it was just a cyst. She showed me on the screen - a crescent of little dots, one of which looked a bit brighter than the others. That's the one that had caused me to get the call back.

If the ultrasound hadn't been clear, I'd have had an immediate biopsy.

However, as I only got to stage 2, they let me go and it didn't take the full five hours.

Hope you're as lucky as me. Most call-backs turn out to be fine. There's a post by Amberlight on the Tamoxifen thread that is v reassuring in the unlikely event it's not.

Thanks thyme - last week's mammogram was done in the specialist breast clinic so I don't think it's a digital/analogue thing but I'll check out amber's post for reassurance

I feel your pain. I was recalled last year after my first mamogram. I too was told that the tests could take a number of hours.

When I arrived I was shown my mamogram and they pointed to a little white round thing saying" it was a cyst and it is benign but thry have to check these out. When I asked how sure they were they said 99.99999% sure.

So why couldn't they have said that on the bloody letter and let me spend a week in a total panic???

I had an ultrasound and needle aspiration where they tried to remove the fluid inside but it was too sticky. The consultant then came in and had a look and said it was absolutely fine and they didn't need to do any other tests.

Being recalled after a mamogram is very common but even if the worst happens, early diagnosis makes a very big difference to the outcome.

Hope it goes well for you. I won't tell you not to worry as I know that's just impossible!

I think it is very common. I've had several lumps followed by mammograms resulting in having cysts aspirated.
I was then called back from my first routine one for a further mammogram - it wasn't a cyst this time just so thing off looking on the slide which I think was the radiographer folding a bit of breast up in the flat plates.

Phew!! Just cysts .. I can stop panicking now

Just found this thread as I find myself in the same situation - they want me back in on Monday. This thread has been great and is helping me keep the anxiety at bay for the time being. Still dreading the appointment though.
