I don't see a lot of women at work who come in dimpling in the breast and then go on to be diagnosed with breast cancer. It's much more common to present with a lump or nipple discharge.

Of course it can be a symptom of breast cancer but it doesn't always mean that if you know what I'm saying. There could be a benign lump like a fibroadenoma causing it, or a cyst that had burst. Or it could just be normal you.

I would definitely asked to get it scanned though, even for your own peace of mind.

validusername · 19/03/2016 19:03

Tan dimpling caused by breast cancer is very obvious once you have seen a few of them. It isn't that common luckily and breasts do dimple as you get older and lose elasticity in the skin.

Tanfastic · 19/03/2016 19:27

Valid, that is a helpful post - thanks.

Roonerspism · 19/03/2016 19:33

I have dimply breasts. Especially when I raise my arms. I have developed more after pregnancies/breastfeeding

I have seen at least three consultants and two GPs over the years and never once has any concern been expressed.

Apparently there is dodgy dimpling and dimple dimpling.

PhoebeJeebies82 · 24/03/2016 10:00

Right I have been ringing my gp's every day and havnt seen anyone for a second opinion yet. Apparently the only gp is the one I saw. But I still have my app on 13th, with a female gp, at least I will see someone then!

the indent is still there, like something was pressed in and skin hasn't gone back to normal, it's there when I lift my arms too. Also I've had some painful red bumps under my armpit that come and go, is this lymph nodes?

OP posts:
FarrowandBallAche · 24/03/2016 10:12

Can you ask to speak to the practice manager?

It's unacceptable to have to wait this long. You need a second opinion.

Be forceful. Cry if need be. Tell them how worried you are.

Roonerspism · 24/03/2016 19:56

If you slide the skin away, does it move, or is it tethered? If you think it's tethered, I wouldn't panic but I would get seen sooner if you can. To put your mind at rest if nothing else

TheHobbitMum · 24/03/2016 20:10

That wait isn't acceptable in my mind, I'd be calling the practice manager and seeing if they can add you to the emergency appointments x

bonzo77 · 27/03/2016 20:39

totally fucking unacceptable. If you'd been referred on a 2 week pathway by now, you'd be seen in a breast clinic before the GP appointment you have booked! Have a look at your local hospital website: they may have a self referral system.

PhoebeJeebies82 · 15/06/2016 10:20

So bringing up my old post as I need to ask questions and my gp's are useless

I saw another go and she said no lump so I'm fine. It's been 2 months since then and it's still there.

The problem is my right breast, I've noticed it has got smaller, and it's shape has changed. I've also had a lump in my left armpit that comes and goes and is sore and red. Don't have it at the moment thankfully.

OP posts:
PhoebeJeebies82 · 15/06/2016 10:22

Posted too soon!!

Anyway I'm reluctant to go back for a third time and get my boobs prodded and be told I'm imagining it again, or its my weight again. I know changes happen when you get older so should I leave it? I have no lumps at all in my breast, the top centre used to curve out and now looks sunken, like it's been pulled in.

Citizenerased123 · 15/06/2016 10:42

Sorry you're having such a stressful time. I am a dr but not GP or breast specialist. Red lumps in the armpit are very unlikely to be lymph nodes- these are deeper and not very easily palpable usually. The red lumps are more likely to be blocked hair follicles that are usually exacerbated by shaving especially if you use razors that are more than a few days old (when the blades are blunter).

I wasn't overly concerned by your picture of your breast dent and if two GPs have reached the same conclusion after properly examining you, I would be reasonably reassured by that.

Do you have a family history of breast/ ovarian or any other cancer? This is the main bit of information that the GPs will be interested in especially as you are only 33.

If you are still worried, make another appointment with your GP and explain how anxious you are. The only way to definitively exclude the possibility of any underlying disease is for you to be seen in a breast clinic and it sounds like you need this to put your mind at rest. Hope it all works out for you

coffeemachine · 15/06/2016 12:27

I would really go back and insist on a referral. In the end of the day, a manual exam can only tell so much but with a dent, changed shape I really would want to be seen, if only to put my mind to rest.

desparateforpom · 02/07/2016 02:13

when i flex my breast the lower left dents/dimple in slightly but when i flex really hard it dents/dimple in more only when flexing nothing on the skin (rash, lump thickening and its probable like this for a long time just never pay attention to it. the right breast have small dents evrywhere but not on exact same thing. this all show only when i flex hard . i saw my NP and check she said she didnt feel anything. im 36 pls anyone have same and what ur gp's thought abput it. ty

desparateforpom · 02/07/2016 02:25

also when i flex and it dents in i try to lift the skin where it dents/dimple in and it disappear.

desparateforpom · 02/07/2016 02:43

hello my question is when i flex my muscle breast my left lower breast dent or dimple in slightly and when i flex hard it gets worse. my right breast have small dents everywhere but not on the exact same thing as my left. i am morbidly obese my breast size is 42dd i have no rash of lump or anything seems concerning that can be felt or seen on the left breast only that when i flex. i saw my NP and did manual exam and said also that she didnt feel anything. also on the left lower breast where it dents/dimple in when i poke it it feels like there is no tissue underneath it it just feels like a small hole. please i appreciate your oppinion about this. thank you

desparateforpom · 02/07/2016 04:43

pls explain what kind of dimpling are ob's looking for that is concerning. is it concerning when flexing the pectorial muscle and it dimples/dent lower part of breast ONLY when flexing. thank you for ur time doctor

TrulyTrulyTrulyOutrageous · 02/07/2016 05:10

How does it work in the uk? I went in with a bump which he didn't think was anything but insisted I had it checked. I had an ultrasound the next day (I paid for it though so maybe that's the difference).

Do you have the option of asking for a referral and going private? He did say based on my situation I wouldn't have been a public priority and would have waited a bit.

PhoebeJeebies82 · 19/07/2016 21:01

Hi me again!

Well I've still got the indent, it's there constantly so I think I do need a referral. Purely for the fact I've had it so long and for my peace of mind.

If my go refuses the referral what can I do??

OP posts:
BadMum1705 · 19/07/2016 21:02

I have a history of cancer in my family, 3 of my mans sisters died from "woman's cancer" so no idea what that was. No immediate family history that I'm aware of but we're not a close family

BadMum1705 · 19/07/2016 21:03

*Nan's not mans!

BuggertheTabloids · 19/07/2016 21:12

Go back and insist. Change in size or shape is something that needs looking at. As is dimpling or a lump in your armpit.
Yes it may well be fine, but I would want to be checked out properly.
I had some minor changes but I got a 2WW referral, it was all fine in the end but my god it was a weight off my mind!

Tanfastic · 20/07/2016 13:22

What you do is you insist.

When the gp says there's no lump you will have to be firm and say there is a dimple that wasn't there a year ago (or however long) and you've seen in the press that a dimple is a red flag for breast cancer so for your peace of mind you would like a referral.

A GP will refer you, they cannot refuse in those circumstances even if they don't feel it's necessary to under the 2WW. Google the Nice guidelines and take them with you.

You need to be authoritative and firm and do not take no for an answer.

Personally it doesn't look like the classic dimpling I've seen on pics in the press however you know your own body and I'm no doctor!

Hi lovely ladies and gents,
So I went to the gp about a week ago about dimpling in my breast, she said she was really concerned about it, she referred me to breast clinic and my appointment is tomorrow!! I'm really anxious, I'm 29yrs, can you see it?
