I can't see a dimple.

I work in a breast cancer unit, PM me if you have any questions.

I can see something but not sure it's a dimple/dent. I've seen the ones that are floating about the Internet/appearing on social media of the two ladies with the indentations and it doesn't look like that to me but I'm no expert. I assume that gp's are clued up in the dimple/dent thing as its been in the media a lot. I know when I had a breast exam last year there was a lot of emphasis on visual, raising my arms and GP looking at my breasts as well as feeling them.

Op, if you don't feel reassured, go back and see a different GP for a second opinion, that's what I did last year.

I would get a second opinion. It can't hurt.

I think I'm going to keep my appointment on 13th. I'm relieved in one way because he said its nothing, but then I'm annoyed he just blamed my weight. My breasts haven't changed in shape or size (noticeable by me anyway) since I was 16 (17 years ago), not even when pregnant. I check my breasts at least once a week so I know my boobs!!

Thank you everyone though for the messages SmileFlowers

I can see a dimple. Please go back again and insist on a referral to your local breast clinic. I'm afraid this is not normal, it could be cancer, it could be nothing, but waiting a month is not a sensible thing to do.

Report
Diggum · 18/03/2016 21:30

I'm sorry to worry you but I agree with Clobbered.

FWIW I'm a GP and I can see skin dimpling there. It's reassuring that there isn't any lump but even with an otherwise totally normal breast exam that warrants an urgent referral.

The national referral form we use in Ireland is below- "skin distortion" ranks as urgent on its own.

I hate second guessing the opinion of a GP who would actually have examined you but I would want to have this checked further....

PhoebeJeebies82 · 18/03/2016 21:40

I will ring Monday and ask to see a different gp.

Diggum he said he couldn't see any dimpling and when I lifted my arms again no dimpling. I do think I need a second opinion, just to ease my mind more than anything. This dr I saw always blames my weight for everything so I usually avoid him.

I thought gp's had to refer you to a breast clinic with two weeks?
I'd definitely go back and ask to be referred, you get an ultrasound/mammogram depending on age. You usually find out on the day what it is unless a biopsy is needed.

I can't really see anything and it could well be nothing but I was diagnosed with breast cancer last year at 34 and I've met a lot of women (particularly young women) going through treatment who were fobbed off by their GP's initially. Please get it checked out sooner rather than later.

Agree with other PPs, am glad you're going to get a second opinion. Also unless you've gained/lost weight I don't understand how your weight has anything to do with it Confused

Diggum · 18/03/2016 21:54

It's subtle I know but I can definitely see it in that photo.

Like I say, it's reassuring to have had a normal examination, but you're not imagining that skin depression. If it's anything it's likely very early on, but all the more reason to get it checked further.

DancingDinosaur · 18/03/2016 22:49

I can see it op. You're not imagining it.

Report
Chchchchange · 18/03/2016 22:57

I can see it too. Hope you can go back and be seen by someone else

I suppose maybe I see stretch marks. My breasts are covered in stretch marks (from adolescence). Luckily I like them :).

Stretch marks would be relevant to weight, I suppose, but not sure what's what the GP said.

Report
PollyPerky · 19/03/2016 07:19

It doesn't look like a dimple. A dimple would be indented whereas what you have posted looks like a slight difference over quite a large area which can be caused by the way the weight of your breast is pulling the skin. I'd still get it checked a 2nd time to be sure, but it's not what anyone would cause dimpling. As someone else said, it looks more like stretch marks or stretching of the skin.

I think you will only be totally reassured op if you get a second opinion with a different GP. I thought I had something last year and GP dismissed it as normal breast tissue, no referral etc. However I couldn't get it out of my head so saw a different GP who to be fair said the same thing but was a lot more reassuring and thorough, spent a lot of time with me even drawing a diagram etc. I was reassured enough by two GP's opinions without insisting on a referral. That was a year ago and nothing has changed for me In The breast area!

If this is a new change and you've not put any weight on or lost any then you are right to want to be totally reassured.

I have stretch marks on my breasts that can look slightly indented in certain lights and I also have cellulite that can look a bit like that if its pulled in a certain way on both breasts. It could be anything or nothing but ring up on Monday and get another appt, don't wait till the 13th.

I'll share My stretch marks. They seem a lot more indented than what I can see on OP's picture. I thought a dimple was a prominent puncture type mark. I don't know when I got mine actually, probably teen yrs. & Maybe they change every week. There's no way I could ever tell if they did or didn't.

I can see a slight dent OP. Especially on the photo before I clicked to make it bigger.

Best of luck.

part of my breast has gone in, like in the photo. Like its concaved (sp?) this has never happened before so obviously I'm worried. It could be the start of something and if it is the earlier the better I would have thought? I can personally see dimpling in this area which isn't showing up on that photo but the "dent" is visible if only slightly.

I will ask to be referred and see what they say, dr yesterday said no. He also said they my right breast (where the dent is) is quite smaller than the left, I'd never noticed that before either.

I also have a very itchy rash on my chest above my breasts but he didn't seem bothered with that, as I had no lumps or bumps anywhere.

Tell the gp that you check yourself regularly and that it is a new change. That it isn't normal for you and they should look into it. Most of the time it turns out to be nothing but best to get a referral to a breast clinic.

How old are you OP if you don't mind me asking? Because you should be called for breast screening between 47 and 50.

PhoebeJeebies82 · 19/03/2016 13:53

I'm 33 Valid.

I told him this, I make sure to check weekly as I've read about hormones changing shapes and sizes with periods and my periods are really irregular, always have been. So in the last 16 years this is the only time my breasts have changed, they didn't even change when pregnant or after birth! He says I must have put on weight or lost weight.

Well breasts do change over time anyway, a lot more as you get older as the breast becomes less dense with actual breast tissue. Hormonal changes are very common.

I do see this a lot at work and from your photo I can't say it would be anything that I personally would be worried about, but it would be best to get an ultrasound scan done just to ensure there isn't anything under the breast that could be changing the shape. Does the tissue inside feel any different to you?

Tanfastic · 19/03/2016 15:36

If there is new dimpling and an indentation there that wasn't there before and you can see it op I am at a loss as to why any gp would refuse to refer, in fact I'm pretty gobsmacked. Surely with all the media surrounding dimpling recently it would be an immediate red flag? Confused

I mean, what sort of dimpling are you supposed to have before they refer exactly?

Report
Wolfiefan · 19/03/2016 15:39

I have a big dent. I also found a lump. I had a referral to a breast unit. Turns out I just have lumpy, denty boobs!
I still check regularly. I need to know what normal for me!
Good luck.
