Niece on ventilator asthma. Anybody know of this???

So DN is in hospital with breathing difficulties last night.
This morning I learnt from her mum she's been put on ventilator for 24 hours!!!!
I'm so shocked at this news, and have been on Google to see if I can understand why.

It happened to me once when I was in Year 8. I had an asthma attack so bad they thought my lung had collapsed.
It's serious but not unusual for us asthmatics. If you go to asthma uk's website I'm sure you'll find more info.
