DD is forever getting nits and this time they seem to be super nits, much harder to get rid of than ever before and ds has them too but had never had them before despite her having them loads. Found a thread on here before where someone recommended covering hair in oil and wrapping in cling film then leaving for hours before washing out. Does seem to work quite well although these buggers just wont die so am trying hedrin now. Dc look very funny though with heads covered in oil and cling film, makes it abit more fun for me!!

Saw something a while ago thats supposed to work as deterrent from age 6 but dd was still 5 so pharmacist wouldn't sell it to me. Has anyone tried it? Is it any good? Im really getting sick of this now so willing to try anything. Spraying her hair with tea tree oil every morning didnt do any good.

And now my head is itching just thinking about it!! I just keep using my straighteners every day and that seems to do the job for me. Perhaps i should start straightening dds hair every morning!

dd1 is allergic to teatree so we struggle with most treatments.Grapefruit is ok though.

Isn't it awful when you notice your kid scratching like a dog in the playground?

Looked on acronym list and FFS seems to sum up current feelings. Dying for glass of wine to calm nerves but meant to be on wagon four days per week as new year's resolution!

Found another live on in DD's hair tonight! This is story so far!
Wednesday - found trillions of live ones, spent two hours combing with conditioner in the morning, one hour at night.
Thursday - no treatment.
Friday - electric comb and hair wash
Saturday - one hour combing with conditioner then Hedrin for 12 hours overnight
Sunday - morning and evening, one hour combing with conditioner
Monday (today) - some buggers still alive! half an hour with conditioner on, one hour combing. Lots came out, dead or alive? Found one on DS, very difficult as 23 months old, moves round bath like lightning, not sure what I'd combed and what i hadn't!

Have spent fortune!

Have been using Bug busting combs but have ordered nitty gritty today, no local chemists sell them. Combing more methodically tonight thanks to Surfermum but could have gone on longer but she's only 4 and it was 7 o'clock and she was in past it.

School didn't circulate letter to class as said she had caught in the hols? However now will have to tell found live one. Previous cases in class have caused much whispering at the gate. Oh god, where's the corkscrew!

Surfermum · 08/01/2007 20:54

If you found trillions on the first day she's unlikely to have caught them during the holidays. More likely to have caught them a while ago and they've been breeding. IMHO!

That's what I thought surfermum. Feel such a bad mum - having said that I was checking her scalp all the time but only looking at flaky skin. Never saw anything else!

Feel sick!

A nurse is apparently coming to the junior school this week to check all the children. DD is in infants, not sure if she's coming there too. Must be a lot going round then as never heard of that happening.

If we ever get rid of them, will incorporate bug busting and conditioning into weekly routine.

Surfermum · 08/01/2007 21:46

Don't feel bad garbo, the bad mums are the ones who never do anything about the nits.

Hi everyone. Got another Bug Busting kit free of charge as the combs were breaking on the other one.

They are from Community Hygiene Concern, bought at www.nits.net/bugbusting. Have also been on www.chc.org/bugbusting.

They have lots of information and the best thing is they have a helpline 020 7686 4321. Nice woman this morning telling me I was doing really well! Bless! Apparently I was bound to find more live ones last night/this morning as they are the babies of last week's adults. She said children can have them for MONTHS before even a vigilant adult spots them. OMG.

Have given some of their leaflets to the school office, including information about National Bug Busting Days - the next one is 31 January.

They also include a letter in their pack to send to your MP. They are campaigning against parents spending a fortune hoping for quick fix methods when they say the best method is removal through combing etc. They say government should provide more information for parents. Here here!
