Dd1 has nits, never had them before so not a clue what to buy.

Which is the best stuff and will one bottle treat 4 people ???

Join the club! We have had them on and off since the end of bloody July - pre-school are too lax about it all.

We tried Lyclear - total waste of time. I go along with the conditioner every other night and a comb through with the nit comb - we have a metal one which was about 10 quid from our local chemist.
I have also heard that a mix of half vinegar and half water is good, and we have tried it. I think it works.

Good luck.

Posey · 01/01/2007 20:24

We don't have a shower either, just a hand held thing over the bath. I have shoulder length thick and wavy hair and if I try to denit myself leaning over the bath I just get neck and back ache. So do it sitting in the bath.

nutcracker · 01/01/2007 20:33

We do have an over the bath shower but for some reason it makes the overflow go nuts.

Have just informed dd that from now on her hair will be tied back so tightly that she won't be able to move her head.

OP posts:
nutcracker · 01/01/2007 20:42

I washed her hair last night and didn't see one single nit, now have seen at least 4 crawlies URGH.

How liong does it take the eggs to hatch ??

She hasn't been near another child since they broke up on the 22nd, other than yesterday when she played with my friends dd.

Dd2 and Ds appear to be clean, so where did they come from ??

OP posts:
nikkie · 01/01/2007 20:51

shouldn't actually need an appointment.Ask for a a phone call or a perscription.
We used to get a chemical thing made by full marks but was quite a strong one you left on o/n .it was no good for the kids (as they have asthma )though.
Tea tree conditioner or something with grapefruit in are supposed to be good!

nikkie · 01/01/2007 20:53

For your hair I recommend hair dye , nits haven't been near me for ages

nutcracker · 01/01/2007 20:58

I did think of that Nikkie and funnily enough it does need doing LOL.

OP posts:
asleep · 02/01/2007 15:08

nikkie, i had them and hairdye didn't kill them!

i would recommend usin herdrin to kill them off and then combing with nit comb every day. repeat herdin after a week. and i always put DD's hair tied back when she's at school.

kittyinwaiting · 02/01/2007 16:00

hedrin works, as does combing and more combing. I did read somewhere that baby oil is effective at suffocating the blighters. Combing also damages them, even if they are not all rmeoved, so they can't lay more eggs.

zephyrcat · 02/01/2007 16:07

Just the thread I need! Discovered earlier that dd has got these dreaded things now. Yuk Have just got some hedrin frmo the chemist and some cream for her neck/shoulders (she's had a reaction to the little buggers)

We've never had it before either so am looking for all 'what to do's'

Do they get onto bedding/clothing or do they live solely on heads?

I've only got a plastic comb - do I go through with that withg conditioner on her head when she's in the shower?

zephyrcat · 02/01/2007 16:08

She's been sleeping in my bed - does that mean I've got them too??

I used Hedrin and combing when DS had lice - because I was a hysterical nit-first-timer, and because i wasn't confident i was being systematic enough with the combing.

If you use Hedrin follow the instructions and do it again exactly a week later. That ensures that the live ones are killed, and then if they have laid any eggs, they have time to hatch, but get killed by the second dose before they are old enough to lay their own new generation of eggs!

I read that they do get onto clothes, pillows etc, but that as they are very thin-skinned (or something) they dry out and die after a very short time away from the human head. So transmission except by them crawling person-person is v unlikely.

The advantage of the nitty-gritty comb (apparantly) is that it has special grooves in the teeth that get eggs out of the hair - wheras other combs have teeth more widely spaced and don't get eggs out. They also have rounded ends to the teeth, and are easier to use because the teeth are longer.

dd's hair is so fine, i find nit combs don't work. the hair just slips through with the egg still attatched. i now do hers dry, under a lamp, and just go through it and pull any eggs down the hair shaft with my nails. she was riddled with them on the last day of term, over 60 eggs, took me 2.5hrs to get them all out. we've never caught a live one until then, i spotted it and managed to grab it. always wash her hair in tea tree shampoo, loads of conditioner, and spray it every morning with tea tree oil when she's at school and then tie it back and she still gets them .

she's back in school tomorrow and i know she's nit free again but will be checking her tomorrow night just in case.

zephyrcat · 02/01/2007 16:46

What do the eggs look like? Are they like teeny tiny water droplets? I've just showered dd, gone through with a comb and then brushed her hair normally. There was a big one in the hairbrush. [puke emoticon]

kittyinwaiting · 02/01/2007 16:58

Zephyrcat, the hatched eggs are white, the ones with lice in waiting to hatch are brown (yuk). They are tiny but I suppose they are water droplet shaped, yes.

asleep · 02/01/2007 18:43

when i wetcombed DD i got one big lice and two little ones out. i used hedrin overnight and in the morning washed it out and combed it through... had a sink full of dead ones.

i'm always shocked to hear advice from mums at the school gate. hair spray and hair gel, adults don't get them?!

nutcracker · 02/01/2007 19:12

OMG, have never had to sit in one spot for so long.

It has taken me 3 hours to do dd1's hair and I still think she has some.

The nit comb was useless so went through her hair practically strand by strand pulling the unhatched ones out with my nails. Found about 6 live ones too.

Couldn't find any on Ds, Dd2 or me but i bet we have eggs.

I think I am going to go and buy some Hedrin tommorow, because I just don't think we will get rid otherwise.

OP posts:
nutcracker · 02/01/2007 20:02

F**K, just found one on me

Definatly getting the Hedrin, first thing tommorow.

DimpledThighs · 02/01/2007 20:05

as for doing your own hair I have found the best thing is to wash it and then put in loads of leave in conditioner and sit infront of the telly combing for a couple of hours.

sexkittyinwaiting · 02/01/2007 20:09

I have never had much success with wet combing. I've alway done it with dry hair.
With wet hair I find the conditioner gets creamy and I can't see what's on the comb. With dry combing I get a cup of boiling water, comb the hair and then swish the comb in the water. I can see exactly what is on the comb and have always found it much easier to catch the buggers this way!!
