Don't worry nutty I found one on me too! Bloody things

I've covered dd and me in Hedrin and have got half as bottle left so enough to re-do us next week.

nikkie · 02/01/2007 21:08

RubyRioja- 7 time this year?

Nutcracker/Zephyr- I used to be the one bringing them home from work (one girl was crawling ) repetedly for weeks until i complained to my boss

drosophila · 02/01/2007 21:17

I recommended to a friend the Nitty Gritty having read about it here. She is not happy with it as you can't see the nits on the comb when after you have combed through. I think she used t use the white combs so could see every thing. She did think it was fantastic at how easily it went through he hair. Anyone know what I should say to her about the visibility issue?

nutcracker · 02/01/2007 21:19

Apparently Hedrin only kills the lice and not the eggs though, is there one that kills both ??

OP posts:
MamaG · 02/01/2007 21:20

my (excellent)HV todl me that the nits drown in the conditioner, so to leave it on for as long as possible. That would be good for you nutty

nutcracker · 02/01/2007 21:33

I think that is probably true MamaG as most seemed to have drowned on DD's head.

It worked better in dd's hair once the constioner had started to dry.

But hedrin is good because it's kind to the person beinfg treated. In some lotions they use a chemical that is now banned as an insecticide in garden centres it's that powerful .
I can use hedrin on my asthmatic son and he's fine. He displayed no symptoms of asthma at all until I used a chemical treatment on him once. He had a bad attack immediately afterwards and has been asthmatic ever since.

CatherineEarnshaw · 02/01/2007 23:33

i always straighten my hair when we get them - FRY the little buggers!

katelyle · 03/01/2007 06:38

I have huge experience of headlice and I've tried everything. Here's what I have concluded over the past 8 years. Don't use the chemical lotions. They might work to kill the live lice but they never kill all the eggs. The other problems witht he chemicals is that the lice quickly become immune to them so they stop working altogether. And it's probably not a good idea to use pesticides on children's heads on a regular basis - frankly having nits will probably do them less harm!.

The new lotions like Hedrin and LiceAttack don't use chemicals and smother the little brs. They work really well but are incredibly expensive.

Wet combing works but is time consuming and stressful. The Nitty Gritty comb is the only one that works - the white plastic ones miss lots and break really easily. BTW, you don't actually have to get every single lice out with the comb - if you do it thoroughly the lice will be too damaged to breed even if you don't actually remove them.

So, the two effective approaches are either hedrin or lice attack or regular wet combing. I confess that I have adopted the throwing money at the problem and use Lice Attack once a week whether I've seen lice or not. We have been nit free since I started doing this, and we are all so relieved not to be doing the wet combing any more.

In an emergency, soaking the hair in cheap vodka works really well and is easy to wash out. Good with ice and tonic too.

sexkittyinwaiting · 03/01/2007 08:40

I'll second that

nutcracker · 03/01/2007 10:54

Right ok, my plan now is, smother everyone in Hedrin later today and leave it on until morning. Then repeat in a week, but inbetween that I will use the nit comb too.

Does that sound like it might work ??? (be warned, if you say no i might cry)

Does that sound like it might work ???

No...... LGJ passes a tissue to Nutty and scarpers.

sounds like a good plan to me! it worked with DD over christmas. i checked her hair this morning and there was nothing. but she's at school again so she's probably got them again by the time she's home!

zephyrcat · 03/01/2007 13:02

lol @ katelyle and the vodka!!

Ok last night me and dd went to bed smothered in hedrin. This morning she went to school at 10:30 after spending all morning combing the b*s out of her hair! It seems to have got them though

Nutcracker it doesn't get the eggs but you have to do it again in exactly 7 days which lets the eggs hatch but the new ones aren't mature enough to breed so you get rid of the lot.

It's nice stuff actually - v greasy but doesn't smell, and both of us with long hair have still got half a bottle left so can use the same bottle next week.

Good luck!!

nutcracker · 03/01/2007 17:23

Zeph, you know in the morning do you comb through it and then wash it out or wash and then comb through ??

They only had the very little bottle at my local chemist so I got 2 as me and the dd's all have shoulder length hair and then ds needs smothering too.

Fingers crossed.

OP posts:
zephyrcat · 03/01/2007 18:44

Hmm I didn't think about that! I just washed it when we got up and then put a tiny bit of conditioner through dd's hair and sat for ages combing it through getting as much out as I could. I don't think I managed to get every last bit but they were definately dead.

Yuk!

nutcracker · 03/01/2007 18:59

Hmm, i might comb it through dry first, with the stuff still on, as dd1 has very fine hair and if I put conditioner on, the comb doesn't pull anything out.

Tis such a big faff isn't it, is driving me nuts now.

OP posts:
canttellyou · 03/01/2007 19:01

comb with conditioner

nikkie · 03/01/2007 19:10

B*llocks, we've got them too must be from soft play the other day as we'venot really seen any other kids this hols.
Only got a couple though so hopefully can clear them before they get a tight hold!

katelyle · 03/01/2007 22:07

I'm not joking about the vodka - I panicked one night when my dd was due to be at the hairdressers the following morning to have her hair done to be a bridesmaid and I found lots of lice! I rang my mum and she suggested vodka and it worked like a dream! Poor child nearly choked on the fumes though!

If you use hedrin or lice attack you have to use it a week later to kill the new hatches. As I said, I just use it every week, gritting my teeth at the cost. You can sometimes get lice attack cheap on ebay by the way.

Used properly, the smothering methods kill all existing lice. You really don't have to comb afterwards - normal brushing will get rid of most of the dead ones. If you're going to spend hours combing you might as well save yourself the money for the product and just do wet combing. Just coat the hair with Hedrin in the evening, then wash it out in the morning. Don't forget to put an old towel on the pillow to protect it from the oily stuff, and you may need two shampoos. Job done. With Lice Attack, you massage it in for five minutes, leave it in for a while then just rinse it out. Easier than Hedrin, but I don't think quite as effective.

nikkie · 04/01/2007 00:14

LOL at the Vodka

zephyrcat · 04/01/2007 12:07

How did it go nutty?

ditzyangeluk · 04/01/2007 17:15

I thought I'd replied to this thread ... sorry!

Ideal cheap solution that REALLY works?

MAYONNAISE

Just put through hair before going in the bath, have bath, rinse out & voila!

Honset, it works

sexkittyinwaiting · 04/01/2007 22:56

What do you rinse it out with? I mean isn't it a bugger to get out??!!
