Week 7 of 52 small changes

I'm not terribly convinced by this week Confused

The aim is to keep outside pollutants outside of the house with the following methods:

  1. Have a no show policy inside the house - remove your shoes at the door and keep fluffy socks and slippers for guests (causing MNer friends and family members to start AIBU threads about you Grin)
  1. The "buffer zone" where you remove shoes should have flooring that is easy to clean, is resistant to moisture and doesn't collect dirt and dust.
  1. The buffer zone should have: a shoe scraper for mud and snow, an outdoor mat to wipe shoes on, an area rug that can be washed, a waterproof shoe mat or tray to collect water when it's raining, a bench/chair to sit on when removing shoes, an exhaust fan to ventilate and avoid mildew and mould (wtf?), hooks for coats, baskets for bags and an umbrella holder.

I'm going to use this week for something else personally!

Previous weeks to carry on with are drinking more water, getting routine activity, getting more sleep, keeping a food diary and taking a multivitamin.

My new mop arrived on Sunday so I have been cleaning the hall/kitchen floor a lot, need to vacuum the carpets though.
We have always left shoes in a pile in the hall but toddler DD like to go and put them on and trample all round the house in them!
After being ill last week I am also finding it helpful to have a week to consolidate previous new habits. Am drinking lots of water again and I was very active yesterday. Just going to take vitamins.

margaritasbythesea · 10/02/2016 10:25

I did feel like I was going to die at first doing the shred

Sirona · 10/02/2016 13:48

This week is a bust. We've had a family bereavement so everything bar exercise as it clears my head has been a total failure. Will be back at it week 8.

Shred tip - if you can, try and do it on a carpeted area or a non slip mat. Despite being a runner so used to bouncing around, shred gave me shin splints after a couple of gos. I mentioned it on the shred thread and it's not uncommon and they gave me that advice.

quirkychick · 10/02/2016 14:07

Oh, Sirona I'm so sorry to hear that Flowers for you.

DrDiva · 10/02/2016 14:10

Somehow I didn't read oddsocks last sentence, so I went from exercising the expletive muscle to margarita doing it much more seriously four years ago! I was a bit boggled for a minute.

Sirona Flowers

This week has definitely had an effect. Every day when I come in, I look at the conglomerate of shoes piled at the foot of the stairs and feel faintly guilty. So I am at least aware!

quirkychick · 10/02/2016 16:25

I have tidied the shoes by the door, but not sorted my own shoes/boots storage out. Now I have more, I need to reorganise them really.

Sleep a little disturbed, but I still had 7hrs 40 mins. I have managed 15,000 steps as I walked to meet a friend for lunch, as well as the school run, and I did 40 mins yoga this morning. Good amount of water, taken vitamins and healthy food of carrot soup for lunch and some yoghurt and berries this afternoon, Chicken broth of some description for dinner.

I have done the Headspace meditation so I feel calm, unlike yesterday when I lost it after dd1 trod in dog poo and it was a bugger difficult to get off her shoes.I didn't lose it with dd1, just the door Blush. Luckily, we didn't bring the pollutants in the house Wink.

DrDiva · 10/02/2016 18:59

quirkychick there is no such thing as too many shoes. Or books.

Thanks for mentioning that book, by the way, it sounds interesting. Not sure if it's right for DS going by the reviews as he doesn't sit on the sidelines? Still would love to get it though!

DrDiva · 11/02/2016 09:18

Shock definitely reading the book, quirky! Just did the questionnaire and he scored 19...
(Downloaded a sample so far)

NightWanderer · 11/02/2016 13:23

Sorry to be a pain. Can somebody list the changes so far? I have them in my head but wanted to write them on my fridge.

OddSocksHighHeels · 11/02/2016 14:46

Night so far there is:

  1. Drink enough water each day
  2. Get 7-8 hours sleep per night
  3. Get routine activity into each day
  4. Keep a food diary
  5. Work on being more positive
  6. Take a multivitamin
  7. Err, buy a gigantic house and create a fancy buffer zone for outside germs?

Today has been difficult as last night the boiler engineer turned off our heating and hot water Shock as we have a corroded flue. Water was dripping from the boiler last night . So we have 3 small fan heaters to heat a 4 storey, old Victorian house. Dd1 is sleeping in with me, as she usually has the basement bedroom and that is just tooooo cold. Dd2 had to be wrapped up massively, as we can't leave a fan heater safely with her. Not much sleep was had by anybody Sad. Part should be here sat or sun.

I have managed lots of walking and water as I had lots of jobs to do in town and I figured it was warmer in and out the shops.

DrDiva I thought dd1 scored 18, but she picked up the book and scored herself 20! She was flattered that I wanted to understand her better.

I think we are scoring badly on the outside germs bit, what with treading on dog poo (not walked in the house) and carbon monoxide!

NoCapes · 11/02/2016 16:58

Hello!
I'm a bit late to the party but would like to join in

I think the whole family could do with a bit of an overhaul - particularly eating better, moving more and being more positive so I'm going to force them to Grin

I've been working on drinking more water this week, bought a fridge jug to fill and I try to drink it all each day (1.8 litres) it's also making me drink less tea which I definitely needed to do

Ignoring this weeks as it's stupid we have a dog and limited space, ignoring the sleep one as we have a 3 month old, so I'm going to do the vitamins I think
I'll catch up eventually haha

margaritasbythesea · 11/02/2016 16:58

Well goodness me! DD scored 20 on that test! I was sceptical and thought maybe most children would score quite highly so did ds and he got 7 or 8. It might explain alot. She's always been tricky as a person. What's the book like?

Sorry for your loss Sirona.

OddSocksHighHeels · 11/02/2016 17:04

Oh no quirky that sounds rough. Do you have electric blankets or anything that could help?

Welcome NoCapes I'm sure you could combine water and vitamins as one week together, getting used to drinking enough water takes a bit of time but one vitamin a day isn't too hard to get into the habit of! Good luck with forcing the entire family to join in Grin

quirkychick · 11/02/2016 17:20

Thanks, Oddsocks, we have some fan heaters. I think it's a case of really wrapping up dd2 at night. I think we are all going to bed early tonight!

margaritas someone recommended the book on mn, but I haven't actually got very far... Blush

margaritasbythesea · 11/02/2016 17:33

Might see if it is in the library. Thanks.

Hello nocapes

Quirky sorry about your boiler btw. Rubbish timing

DrDiva · 11/02/2016 19:24
  1. Drink enough water each day - mostly really good now. Today not so good, hugged a litre as soon as I got home.
  2. Get 7-8 hours sleep per night yup. Ish.
  3. Get routine activity into each day more steps per day.
  4. Keep a food diary mostly better food choices. We draw a veil over today but it is our wedding anniversary!
  5. Work on being more positive have downloaded Headspace. Thanks for the recommendation, whoever that was
  6. Take a multivitamin yup
  7. Err, buy a gigantic house and create a fancy buffer zone for outside germs Grin working in the buying bit! With the next spare couple of million.
DrDiva · 11/02/2016 19:27
  1. Drink enough water each day much better generally. Today not so good so glugged a litre when I came home.
  2. Get 7-8 hours sleep per night getting there. Sort of.
  3. Get routine activity into each day more steps per day
  4. Keep a food diary mostly lcing successfully. Will draw a veil over today. But it is our wedding anniversary!
  5. Work on being more positive have downloaded Headspace, thanks for the recommendation whoever that was.
  6. Take a multivitamin yup
  7. Err, buy a gigantic house and create a fancy buffer zone for outside germs Grin working on having a couple of spare million!
DrDiva · 11/02/2016 19:27

Sorry, thought my post had disappeared!

OddSocksHighHeels · 11/02/2016 19:31

Yeah I'll have step 7 sorted as soon as I've saved a few million or so as well Grin

fuzzpig · 11/02/2016 20:45

I'm several weeks behind. I did take my vitamin D today... :o

Shirkingfromhome · 11/02/2016 22:30

Week 7 is a write-off for me. DH has put his muddy trainers ON THE BED and completely denies it even though they are on top of the wardrobe

I'm not even sure where to begin Confused there must be man-logic at work here.

DrDiva · 11/02/2016 23:26

Shirking I hope at least it was on his side!!

quirkychick · 12/02/2016 06:41

Shirking yuck! We have failed spectacularly on the outside pollutants, you obviously need a country pile with a boot room! Dd1 nearly bought in a load of dog poo earlier this week and it would appear our boiler has been letting in carbon monoxide... at least the boiler is in the kitchen in an extension, so not really in the main part of the house. Thanks for everyone's kind thoughts, it should be fixed Saturday or Sunday.

  1. I drink plenty.
  2. Reasonable sleep last night, and I am averaging 7hrs 20mins the last few weeks despite some dodgy nights. So, my average sleep us improving!
  3. I do plenty of walking, some yoga but need to start to do my weights properly again. I am going to jiggle around how I schedule in the yoga sessions to do this. It might go pear-shaped as it's half-term next week...
  4. I am logging my food and water on mfp, so trying to watch food choices.
  5. Doing my Headspace again, I need to make sure it's daily, so that's part of my reorganising my schedule thing,
  6. Multivitamin, mostly but forgot yesterday with lack of sleep and all the boiler drama.
7.Er no, see above Smile.
Shirkingfromhome · 12/02/2016 06:49

Thankfully it was on his side. Although he denied it even though it left a muddy trainer shape in a size 11. Must have been someone else Hmm

Crikey, that's lucky your boiler isn't in the main part of your house quirky
