Tonsilitis? Should I go to docs?

Woke up yesterday wth glands up and very very sore throat (feels like have a big lump in there and looks very red and swollen in the mirror).
Developed a temperature at lunchtime and while haven't gone above 102f, nurofen and paracetomol not bringing it down. Feel hot and sweaty.
It's been such a long time since I'e been to the docs that I don't know whether this is something I just ride out, or whether I need maybe antibs.

Yes. 'Phone up your out of hours GP now. If he/she says it's nothing to worry about, at least that will have put your mind at rest.

But I suspect they'll ask to see you. Good luck

Yep, i think tonsilitis is one of those things that needs antibiotics to get shot of it.

Thanks both of you. I rang NHS direct and they said it sounds viral (throat just incredibly red but with no manky white spots) so antibiotics would not help.
Am going to keep an eye on it - haven't felt this ill for a very very long time. Thank goodness it didn't start tilBoxing Day as I was hosting family Christmas this year.

I would be tempted to see the GP (if possible) Sadly, I find NHS hit and miss and the doc can have a look and get it noted on your records

grouchyoscar · 27/12/2006 10:38

nhs direct that is!

foxinsocks · 27/12/2006 10:39

you can get a throat spray from the chemist that will numb your throat (forget the name -chloraseptic or something like that?)

LIZS · 27/12/2006 10:45

Lozenges like Merocaine are useful(pain relief and antibacterial), plus gargling with souble aspirin or paracetamol.

As an update - felt progressively worse yesterday and this morning had white patches of doom in my throat. Straight to GP and 10 day course of penicillin!
Haven't felt this ill for a long time. Thank goodness it's a week when dh can reasonably stay away from work.
Thanks for the advice.
I am seriously thinking that if I get this again I want them gone.
