Ds sent to hospital with suspected pneumonia

Ds is usually very fit, runs most days, gym four or five times a week. At the weekend he came down with a virus so had high temperature, rigors, cough, sore throat. Expected him to shake it off but went to GP Monday as was feeling poorly and she prescribed antibiotics and ordered blood tests.
He went back today as still feeling awful and GP sent him to hospital. His blood shows an infection but the GP said that his white blood count is "wrong"
At the hospital he's had an xray which shows a slight infection, another blood test which "shows a problem" and is now being repeated again with more blood tests and he has to have a urine test and swabs taken.
Since Christmas he's been unusually tired but he works hard and thought that the break had thrown him off routine. I feel quite anxious, any thoughtson what might be wrong?

Those nurses should be ashamed of themselves. I'm really glad you're allowed in to see him, both for his and for your sake.

Owllady · 15/01/2016 14:42

I hope they find out what it is soon for him insanity, so he can start treatment Flowers

Pobspits · 15/01/2016 14:49

Oh, how worrying for you. Big hugs. Hope your DS is diagnosed and better soon.

nooddsocksforme · 15/01/2016 19:34

best wishes to you both . I have 2 ds just slightly younger and agree that you almost worry more as they get older. Not impressed with those nurses but there will be lots of discussions going on about trying to sort out what's happening in the background .Hope things improve soon

moosemama · 15/01/2016 21:34

I've only just seen this thread.

So sorry to hear about your poor ds.

I will be keeping everything crossed that they get to the bottom of it all and start him on the right treatment really soon.

Sending lots of love, light and strength to you and your whole family in the meantime. Flowers

SirVixofVixHall · 15/01/2016 21:40

Oh my goodness how scary for all of you. I hope that they work out what is going on asap, and that he starts feeling better. Flowers

twirlypoo · 15/01/2016 21:42

bimandbam · 15/01/2016 21:44

How bloody terrifying for you all. Hope he is on the mend soon.

Donthate · 15/01/2016 21:50

Hope he's on the mend soon. How scary for you all

insan1tyscartching · 15/01/2016 21:50

Well we have found out he has influenza A (bird flu) a lower respiratory tract infection, pleurisy and septicemia. The bird flu is the cause of his other problems and he is neutropenic although he has been given medication that is showing signs that this is being addressed. They've added another antibiotic and he's on pain relief because he is in terrible pain.
It is still scary of course because he's really ill but he is expected to make a full recovery although probably not as quickly as ds imagines he will.
After seeing ds this last week we will all be getting flu jabs next year and every year from now on because I don't doubt that had he been a child or an elderly person then the outcome could have been very different.
Thank you one and all for letting me offload here it's been really cathartic and I'll keep popping on to let you know how ds gets on Flowers and if anyone gets flu symptoms that don't seem to be easing please don't hesitate to get medical advice.

Oh your poor DS and you as well Flowers

Good job they've found out what strain he has and can treat it accordingly.

Hope he feels better soon, what a scary time for you all xx

BabyGanoush · 15/01/2016 21:59

Hope he gets better soon

SmallGreenBouncyBall · 15/01/2016 22:02

your poor ds. hope he recovers quickly.

actually with certain strains of flu it's young healthy adults who seem get it worse. the immune system goes into overdrive and starts attacking the own body. this weakens the body and gives rise to secondary infections.

PunkrockerGirl · 15/01/2016 22:06

Hope he makes a quick recovery. What a worrying few days you've had. Flowers

Ringadingdingdong · 15/01/2016 22:07

Just goes to show how nasty certain strains of flu can be. Really hope he's feeling much better soon. Good job he has his Mum looking after him Flowers

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/01/2016 22:59

h1n1? When dd caught that strain in 2009, big big nosebleeds, but nothing like your poor ds.

Pobspits · 15/01/2016 23:07

We all had swine flu which I appreciate is a different strain but it is incredible how it can affect you. Dh and I were ill, newborn dd completely unaffected (?) and ds (3) got pneumonia and was horribly, horribly Unwell. He got through it though, as will your ds.

redspottydress · 15/01/2016 23:17

Bird flu? Are you in the UK? Sounds awful for him and you. I hope he recovers quickly.

SmallGreenBouncyBall · 15/01/2016 23:19

bird flu is all around us.
luckily it's not keen to jump from bird to human.

Raeray · 15/01/2016 23:38

Op I hope your son is feeling better very soon.
Flu A is from same family as swine flu and bird flu but isn't actually either of those. Is amazing how it can knock even a healthy young person though - proper flu is not to be messed with you are right OP!

bimandbam · 16/01/2016 06:12

I am glad you have answers and the prognosis is good for him. Poor lad and poor you.

I had a normal flu when I was in my early 20's and it is fucking horrible and took ages to get over.

NotSoFancyNancy · 16/01/2016 06:27

Hope ds is doing better today and wishing him a speedy recovery

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 16/01/2016 07:14

Glad his prognosis is good.

I know 2 people who have been hit extremely hard by this strain of flu this year. One is a small child who had flu spray done. Very scary.

Hope he turns corner soon.
