Ds sent to hospital with suspected pneumonia

Ds is usually very fit, runs most days, gym four or five times a week. At the weekend he came down with a virus so had high temperature, rigors, cough, sore throat. Expected him to shake it off but went to GP Monday as was feeling poorly and she prescribed antibiotics and ordered blood tests.
He went back today as still feeling awful and GP sent him to hospital. His blood shows an infection but the GP said that his white blood count is "wrong"
At the hospital he's had an xray which shows a slight infection, another blood test which "shows a problem" and is now being repeated again with more blood tests and he has to have a urine test and swabs taken.
Since Christmas he's been unusually tired but he works hard and thought that the break had thrown him off routine. I feel quite anxious, any thoughtson what might be wrong?

I hope you will be able to update with better news soon.

Seriouslyffs · 15/01/2016 06:41

How's it going insan?

insan1tyscartching · 15/01/2016 06:49

Well ds is now being barrier nursed as one of his throat swabs showed a dangerous strain of flu but this is alongside a bacterial infection that they can't find the source of and anomalies in his blood.
We have to wear full face masks, gloves and gowns to visit him although they would prefer no visitors but as I said I have cleaned his bathroom, stripped his bed, done his laundry and spent hours with him since he became ill so it's a bit late for worrying about being exposed now.
No idea what strain it is though but ds said two nurses were arguing because neither of them wanted to be his nurse outside the door of his room.
He was really low last night, I think he thought he'd be on the mend once he got to hospital but he's no better and all that seems to be happening are more and more blood tests (every three hours) with no answers.
Hoping today that there is some progress made either in them identifying what's wrong or ds starting to recover.

Poor lad, hope they sort him soon x

Badders123 · 15/01/2016 08:00

Rally hoping for some Good news for you today X

TheoriginalLEM · 15/01/2016 08:31

thinking of you both. he is in the right place even though it must feel bloody scary just now. The nurses were bloody unprofessional and probably didn't want the hassle of barrier nursing rather than fear of infection.

Does your ds have his phone/charger? ipad etc? can he have one of those tv things? those things will cheer him up for sure xx

Bunbaker · 15/01/2016 08:40

I hope he feels better soon. What a worry Flowers

Jivetoes · 15/01/2016 08:43

Thinking of you. I hope they find out what it is soon and your son improves quickly.

Aquamarine70 · 15/01/2016 09:16

cecinestpasunepipe · 15/01/2016 10:08

Any news, insan? Flowers

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 15/01/2016 11:24

Hope they have some answers for you soon OP. You never stop worrying no matter how big they get Flowers

insan1tyscartching · 15/01/2016 11:39

Still waiting for Doctors, his temperature is up again in spite of the paracetamol and in spite of them having doubled the already strong dose of antibiotics so no idea what will happen there. It was a high normal yesterday it's up in the hundreds today so really hope it's not the infection coming back or gaining strength again. He is so weak, can barely manage the three steps from bed to loo and any movement means his gasping for breath starts again even changing position in bed. He has managed half a slice of toast earlier the first food since Friday so that's a positive step. Can hardly believe that someone who could run a mile in under five minutes last week can barely move this week.

Nothing much I can offer except a ((hug)) for you. My DD is in her 20s and I can confirm that no matter how old your DCs are, you feel the same about them.
Thinking of you both and hoping he turns a corner soon Flowers

Footle · 15/01/2016 13:10

You must be in a sort of suspended state - been there. I shall look for updates. All the best.

Hassled · 15/01/2016 13:14

Blimey - this sounds awful - for you as well as him. Fingers and everything else are crossed.

NameRanger · 15/01/2016 13:14

Hope your DS feels better soon Flowers

lougle · 15/01/2016 13:44

Hang in there. What will be happening behind the scenes is lots of very experienced doctors and microbiologists poring over the results so far and how he is on the ward, to come up with a plausible explanation. They'll be sifting out the bits that can be attributed to the flu, then looking at the rest to see what pattern they can find.

Medicine isn't as defined as it seems on TV. Treatments need time to see a response. They'll get there. Meanwhile, they'll be supporting his body until the can sort out a treatment for the cause of the symptoms.

lougle · 15/01/2016 13:45

Also, shame on the nurses that he heard arguing over who would care for him. I'd nurse him in a heartbeat. It's part of the job.

Pipistrella · 15/01/2016 13:54

Another hand hold here in case it's any use. Thinking of you both and will keep checking back for updates.

Bunbaker · 15/01/2016 14:24

Still thinking of you both.

Twitterqueen · 15/01/2016 14:31

OP
The gowns and masks are as much for his benefit as yours. They don't want him to be exposed to any other germs when he's in a low state.

Flowers and all good wishes. The NHS really does know its stuff - and if they can't immediately identify what's wrong you can be sure there will be loads and loads of doctors all working very hard to find the cause.

Titsalinabumsquash · 15/01/2016 14:33

How worrying for you, I hope your DS is on the mend soon, it's frustrating and scary when no one seems to know what the problem is.

How awful of the nurses, it's incredibly unprofessional.
