Have you tried Nurse Harvey's Gripe water rather than Woodwards? My mum gets mine from a strange little chemist. It's only a couple of pounds.

Baby massage worked for us. It's detailed here . You need to do firmly; don't tickle! I got those from Peter Walker's "Baby Massage" book.

Get those farties out.

gloworm · 20/05/2004 11:00

spod, friendly bacteria worked for us. They have different bacteria in their gut than adults so acidophilus will not work, Solgar do one called ABCdophilus which has lots of the bacteria that babies and young children need. it comes in powder and they only need tip of a teaspoon everyday. can add to water, formula or food. you can get it in a health shop.
we have used it on 2 children and have found it fantastic. ds (now 2), had terrible wind until we started using this, he noticably improved almost straight away.

also found tummy massage quite good.

gloworm... i just phoned holland and barrett and they said that the stuff you mentioned shouldnt be used on children or babies... what do you reckon?

OP posts:
gloworm · 20/05/2004 13:26

spod, many people have said that H&B give rubbish advise, IMO they are a profit orientated chain, as opposed to smaller independant health shop that are usually run by people with a huge interest in health etc (sorry, bit of a rant)

anyway the stuff I mentioned is FOR babies and children, its made especially for little ones!
I wouldn't have used it on my 2 if I had even the slightest doubt

Do you have another health shop in your area?

I used to buy a camomile baby drink from boots. It was like a powder you just add to boiled water. It really helped my dd, dont know if they still do it?

Spod · 20/05/2004 22:36

thanks gloworm... i looked it up on the net and of course you're right.... coincidently h and b dont stock that brand which is why they advised against it1 no other helth food shops nearby but have found online order place. thanks. i am trying fennel tea for the time being.... shes farted a lot since drinking it so you never know.

Spod · 21/05/2004 21:32

well.... I AINT COUNTING MY CHICKENS JUST YET but she slept through last night, with no wind problems... till 6.15 (with a short moan at 4am that we didnt respond to) so i am hoping fennel tea is doing its job... I've been drinking it too as I'm still breastfeeding... bloke in H&B reckons that would help. dd loves the tea too!!

i know this goes against all the rules but have you thought about letting her sleep on her tummy.
dd has been on tummy since a few months old and it was the best decision we made (wish we has done it with ds). she was always strong and able to lift her head up since a few days old.
we tried it during naps for a few days and then started it at night too. had a few sleepless nights here i kept getting up to check on her. we've never had any problems. (until yesterday, she has started rolling on to her back after i leave her down, and only sleeps half as long...trying to nip that one in the bud before it becomes a habit!)
anyway its just a thought (i know its not recommended)

Spod · 27/05/2004 20:52

thanks gloworm, actually shes started rolling over on her front to sleep anyhow, think its helping a bit with the wind... but not entirely... fennel tea aint helping.. tho' dd loves it so will keep using it... any other suggestions??

spod, read back further down this thread again..solgar ABCdophilus (baby bacteria)...really worth a try...you will know if its working with first packet...if it doesnt work you dont need to buy another one (although it will do baby lots of good generally/immune system anyway)

Spod · 28/05/2004 10:10

hi gloworm... i'm not discounting your suggestion, its just that its quite expensive and i thought i'd try cheaper remidies first. £15 is a lot of money if it dont work.

gloworm · 28/05/2004 10:31

it is a bit on the pricy side

at least you know about it if all else fails (and one bottle lasts for months and months)

summermum · 28/05/2004 10:44

WE had this prob with our son (now 10 months). He would go to sleep day & night and wake up after 200 minutes screaming in agony with wind, we tried everything, gripe water, infacol, dentinox fennel tea nothing worked. Then we were told to try a thing called COLIEF it is quite dear, £10 for a small bottle. If you are breast feeding you express at iny amount of milk into a little medicine beaker and add a few drops of colief to this then give it to DD before her feed. This helped our son after about 2 to 3 doses. Thay have to use it at every feed and eventually you can wean them off. However we discovered at 6months when we started to bottle feed our DS during the day that the prob re-occured and started again on the colief to no avail. He was unfortunatley allergic to lactose and is now on soya milk. The colief is available at Boots at the medicine counter and a lot of chemists also sell it. It basically helps break down the lactose in mothers/formula milk, as the 2 reasons for colic wind are trapped air bubbles or the lactose in the gut not being broken down properly thus fermenting in the gut and causing wind/acid. Hope this helps.

summermum · 28/05/2004 10:45

Ooops meant 20 mins not 200 mins

wiltshire · 29/05/2004 02:43

Ditto colief. About 28 drops to a small bottle. So don't give it in every bottle. Worked for me and my Ds didn't actually have colic just needed to fart - and break wind he did!

Spod · 29/05/2004 10:45

can you give drops straight into mouth? shes quite good at taking medicine, but REFUSES bottles!!!

OP posts:
wiltshire · 30/05/2004 01:50

Sorry you do have to give colief in the bottle. However, have you thought about mixing some pear/orange juice together with water and giving that.

wiltshire · 30/05/2004 01:51

Sorry on a spoon or in a plastic injection.

Spod · 30/05/2004 11:16

so, i can just dilute the drops in 5ml of water and give to her in a medicince syringe.... where can i get this stuff, local chemist never heard of it
