Hi Spod, My MIL told me that when babies are cutting teeth it upsets their tummies, ie diorreah (sp?) hence more wind. Has her poo changed whilst the teeth are coming thru? TBH though my dd always seemed the same with her wind whether teething or not, it was just another discomfort for her to bear.

Are you still dairy free and did you give her anything diferent to eat or drink during this last week.? If not then it is more than likely going to be the teeth. Hopefully it should settle down was they have broken thru the gum.

It's tough isn't it, sometimes you feel scared to think they are now ok, incase something else happens.

Btw I have received yr em address via mumsnet, thanks will keep in touch.

Let us know how things are going.

Hi Spod, I've been thinking about you and yr dd and remembering back to when my dd was around the 10 month mark.

Yr dd's symptoms are very similar to my dd's. I know I keep going on about poo but it is a very important factor when it comes to wind. I don't know whether you will remember in a previous posting of mine on yr thread when I said that at the age of 10 months, my dd had impacted stools. I was very shocked about this as she had always opened her bowels on a daily basis, but she wasn't emptying herself and I was abviously unaware that this was happening to her! I knew constipation existed but not on that level. The gastro doc gave me alot of info on what to look out for with colours and textures of poo (sorry -what a topic!)When they have impacted stools thre is no room for the wind to come out as the colon/bowel is full of poo!. My dd had an xray which showed how blocked she was, the xray showed the air pockets that were stuck in her bowel (poor thing). He then explained on how the digestive system works in detail - very interesting actually.

I just can't help thinking that she may have a similar problem or there is something in her diet that is causing excess wind Do you keep a food diary? On the 3 weeks that yr dd was ok was there anything different you gave?

I know exactly what you are goig thru, I used to cry alot in the early stages but gradually excepted that this was part of my life now - I'd tried everything like you and nothing worked or still works. There's so much info I could share with you and it would take for ever to go thru it all, I may em you in the nr future in the hope that something will help.

In the end I stopped trying to make my dd go to sleep as I found it too stressful and a waste of time and let her run around and tire herself out. This is something that you may not want but I found it easier to deal with and took the pressure off bed time (iykwim)

Sorry if I've gone on abit - thinking of you. take care. xxx

chamomilla medicine(homeopathic from healthfood shop)is good
try fennel or chamomile tea
id try the chammomila dissolved in very weak fennel/or chamomile tea given a few times on a teaspoon
chammomila can work wonder its has a soothong effect and is a painkiller too.and its safe from birth.

ds was screaming in the night with back teeth a few weeks ago.I had no nurofen or calpol in.so I gave him the chammomila(faithless dp said it wouldnt work)but after about six small doses he was dosing in my arms and he slept the rest of the night .
this medicimne is totally harmless and works id never be without it in ny med box!

bicbic · 03/08/2004 23:54

another good way chamomilla works is to take it yourself if breastfeeding -simple!
I think it has one l sorry spellings not a strong point tonight!

bicbic · 03/08/2004 23:57

sorry meant one m as in chamomilla not chammomila
can buy it in granules (easy to disolve) pills small pills or drops(good to put in drinks for teethers......

Hi spod

My dd always seemed/seems relatively settled in the day time although I know the wind is still there from her movements which consist of her mainly sticking her bottom in the air whilst on all fours and swaying. She literally twists her body in 2 different directions. She has learnt her own techniques to help expell the wind.

Night is always worst and I think it's because the wind starts building throughout the day and reaches its peak at night. If you have ever had wind yorself, it always seems worse at night. One thing I have noticed is if my dd's clothes/nappies are too tight around her waist esp after having a meal, she is much worse.

In the poo dept, there should be no hard bits to start off with which means she "might" have some constipation. The texture should be smooth and farly thick. If the poo is runny or every few days you notice that it is like diaorreah then it could be an "over spill" which means she is blocked and old poo squeezes past the impacted stool. The colour should be relatively the same every day. If it is light brown/yellowey and loose/textured then this is old poo which has broken down a 2nd time. Sorry this is an awful thing, hope no-one is reading this whilst eating! Gosh I sound like I'm an obsessed poo expert!

When Yr dd is having one of her wind breaking sessions, does her tuumy sound like it is churning and making lots of bubble/gurgling noises? my dd's did when she was blocked, not so much now though.

The research I did led me to think my dd might have very slow peristalsis (sp) the natural gut digestion process being very sluggish causing excess wind. All the Dr's dismissed this - don't know what to think anymore. One Dr said there might a slight twist in the intestine but another Dr said she would be screaming in agony if that was the case. My dd thankfully never cries, she knows no other life and probably thinks that all this discomfort is normal.

I tried chammmomilia crystals when my dd was 4 months old. It initially worked, she started farted freely but after 2 weeks it stopped. When speaking to the homeopathic Dr about this, they said it was normal to stop working if the body had got used to it! (something on those lines anyway)

Keep in touch and good luck at the c.o.

spod, just a few thoughts on the whole poo thing!! I notice on your list of fruit you dont mention much fruit. will she eat thing like peaches, apricots, pears, apples, kiwi, mango, plums, cant think of any more?

if she does eat fruit make sure it is not after other food. fruit is really easy to digest so it passes through the stomach quite quickly. most other food takes longer to digest and sits in the stomach longer. if she has dinner, followed by fruit, then the fruit will start fermenting and producing wind while its sits around waiting on the other food to be digested.

also wheat can cause bloating in some people. we try to keep dd off wheat until over 1yr. she has a small crust of bread when we are eating as it keeps her quiet!! and the odd rusk, but no other wheat. Wheat includes bread, biscuits, cakes, pasta, weetabix, some cereals, most baby jars/packets.

also does she drink lots of fluid each day? our dd has 3 x 8oz bottle and some drinks of water from a beaker. does make a difference to consistency of poo, if she has a bad day with drinking the poo is definatly smaller and harder.

Does she have lots of time on floor, crawling or just lying on tummy? and lots of pushing up and trying to move? what I mean is that the bowels need exercise to work properly. think about when you go on a long car/plane journey, most people end up constipated because of the lack of movement/exercise.

that all I can think of for now!!

fimbles · 04/08/2004 13:25

Gloworm, how interesting about the fruit. My dd eats loads of it and mainly after her meals. Do you suggest I give it before a meal or as a snack on its own?

fimbles · 05/08/2004 10:35

bump - gloworm r u there?

gloworm · 05/08/2004 11:04

i would give fruit as a snack or meal on its own.

if giving as part of a meal, then give about half hour before the rest of the food.

try this for about a week (just in case it does not make a difference straight away)

Hi new to mumsnet, just been reading your messages very interesing. i have a four month old with similar problems at my wits end. She sleeps through the night ok its during the day thats a nightmare constant crying bringing up wind (burping not farting though) but obviously in much discomfort before the wind comes up. when it doesnt come up the crying becomes screaming getting a bit much to bear now poor little dd.sometimes during breast feeding she cries out wanting to feed but unable to when i take her off ( even when she has only had a few mouthfuls) she crys but crying at breast also usually wind does come up and then she can feed again!when she sleeps during day wakes up suddenly screaming and can do nothing to comfort her. tried infacol, gripe water, just got hold of some colief no difference as yet, been to dcs 3 times one doctor recommended calpol for a week !!! (i was horrified payed no attention obviously).thinking about cranial osteopathy or anything really, feel so sorry for her. my older ds had no problems like this.the stress of it all getting too much now as just become lone parent. life just doesnt get any better!!
