Anyone had a squint straightened as an adult?

Long story short- had a squint straightened twice as a child, first op over corrected. In the last 6 or 7 years, it has gone out again and I am debating whether to have it straightened. Am worried about getting double vision and just wondered if anyone had experience of this?

Hi, I've just had an appt yesterday and the doctor agreed I can try botox injection as I'm not keen on surgery.

I had mine 'straightened' at age 7 and again at 19 but my eye still wanders, making me feel self conscious. My eye goes inwards and sometimes also upwards, depending on which direction I'm looking in. WhiteCoconut, did they recommend Botox specifically for your case, or is it widely used nowadays? It's never been mentioned to me before.

A friend of mine did, but it was part of a vision-correcting operation.

I told them myself I would like to try botox first and they agreed. The doctor said I can have one injection first to see how it goes and I can always have surgery if I change my mind. He mentioned double vision so I guess he wants to see how I'll see when my eyes are straightened with Botox before deciding on surgery.

Whitecoconut was this on the NHS or have you gone private?

On NHS, my GP referred me.

@Whitecoconut - I am trying to find out the experiences of anyone who has had botox for a squint. Lots of threads started and no one came back to say what happened!

@stumbledin, no, I did not go ahead with botox. I was told one patient had six weeks of double vision so I cancelled my surgery. I also cancelled the squint surgery because I was too scared so today I'm still stuck with my squint. My grown up daughters never mentioned my squint until I told them. Guess it's not very noticeable to others.

Thanks so much. Have started to wonder myself. Although my squint is quite bad, I have glasses with corrective prisms so not sure, unless they can guarnatee the botox permenantly correcting the squint, that I want to go back every 3 months or so, and never have the right prescription glasses as things change back.

@stumbledin, does your eyes turn inwards or outwards? Mine are inwards but no mentioned of corrective prism by the optician. I wonder can I correct my squint with glasses?

Botox is only a temporary solution so you need to top up every few months. But I remember my consultant saying hopefully after a few botox injections, your eyes will remain in the correction position for longer.

The first week or so you may get double vision until the eyes gradually move to the correct position.

@Nets888 - my eye turns inwards and to begin with was easily corrected with a prims prescription, with varivocals.

If you get double vision or if not servere like a shadow outline of something you are looking at would have thought your optician would have suggested prisms.

A real life optician has responded to my thread, and am waiting to see what she says. Maybe take a look and see - or ask her?
