Ringworm? On the face?

Popped into the chemist today to ask the pharmacist to recommend a cream to use on a patch on ds face, which I assumed was eczema (sp).

He is prone to the odd patch, both on his body and his face and the gp has prescribed steriod cream which works well, but it's not supposed to be used on the face.

So I asked the pharmacist, and he said it looked like ringworm to him, and to take him to the gp.

Don't know much about ringworm, other that it's fungal? Any experiences?

yes, look it up on google images, and see some pictures. Both my dc's had it, ds on the leg then recently a patch on his face that I thought looked like ringworm, then DD got 3 patches on her face. I treated it with antifungal cream (I think Canesten is OK) for about ten days I think- see on Google- you have to be sure it's gone or it recurs. I didn't take them to tthe doctor either time cos they tend to prescribe half the pharmacy here in France, I avoid it if possible. HTH

Panicpants - you mention that your ds has excema. My dd has discoid excema which is often mistaken for ringworm. Ringworm usually has a patch of normal skin in the middle; discoid excema is circular patches.

Hmm really? Well I will take him to gps in the week, (if it's still there of course, guarenteed to go the second I make an appointment)and see what he says, I will mention both the ringworm and the discoid ezcema.

Yes my immediate thought was discoid eczema as my ds has that. He also had it with the 'normal' patch in the middle, but it has been diagnosed by a consultant dermatologist as discoid and not ringworm. You won't get much joy froma GP though with the subtleties of differences. It's worth paying for one private consultation to put your mind at rest. We have Betnovate for the body and Trimovate for the face, both contain antibacterial as well as steroid.

Incidentally I saw 5 different GP's as I could never get the same one at our surgery. And NONE of them knew it was discoid eczema (or how to treat it) even though it was really terrible at one point, all over back front and arms, and the poor boy couldn't sleep. One said it may be psoriasis, but it isn't.

Just been looking at pictures of both the discoid eczema, and ringworm on google, an they do look similiar.

Ellie, we were very lucky with our GP. He recognised dd's discoid immediately but it's been a bugger to get rid of.

It's fine now. Aveeno and the steroids keep under control and I found a new washing thing that has no chemicals called 'wash nuts'! Incidentally the consultant told us a lot of them say you can't use it on the face but consultants say eumovate strength is ok for face. (However, def see one for yourself!).
