Weird bite-like lumps on the side of the knuckle crease on my finger

Any ideas what this might be?

I probably would have written this off as some sort of insect bite except this happened on the same finger joint about a month ago.

First time round my hands were a bit cracked and sore and I noticed that round the side of that finger joint was worse than the others (so I could feel it when I bent it). I noticed the skin was red sore and puffy (about a centimetre in diameter) and then little raised white lumps like insect bites showed. It was like that for a day or two, then gradually subsided away. So I forgot all about it.

Today I noticed that the same finger joint is sore again (skin not cracked this time though) with the red and puffy area. If I can look carefully I can sort of see a few lumps that look as if they're going to turn into those "bite" marks again.

It's really weird - any guesses what it could be?

I get this too every now and then, mine are really itchy and like very tiny blisters, still haven't found out what it is or what triggers it.

belgo · 16/12/2006 08:45

Do you have a ring on that finger? Is it itcy? I'm wondering if it's a reaction to the ring, or maybe a reaction to something else.

Or it could be an infection, in which case a doctor needs to look at it.

I often get little heat bumps on my fingers.

I'm not sure if they're insect bites, not in cold weather.

belgo · 16/12/2006 08:46

I mean itchy, not itcy

belgo · 16/12/2006 08:48

tiny itchy blisters sound like heat bumps.

Other things that can cause bumps on your fingers are:

hand foot and mouth disease (a mild virus that's very common in children)
scabies (but that would be really itchy, and in other parts of the body.)

RubberDuckWithCranberrySauce · 16/12/2006 08:55

FredBassett - that's exactly how they're like - just in a very localised area.

belgo - no ring on that finger, no and no contact with anything odd.

I'm not sure if insect bites is the right description - probably nettle rash is better...

Incidentally, I think both times it's happened within a week of starting a course of homeopathy... just checking the dates now. Could such a highly localised reaction be from something like that, do you think? Or is it coincidence?

Sorry I don't know anything about homeopathy. Maybe you could ask wherever you got the homeopathic drugs from.

corrina28 · 16/12/2006 09:12

could it be dermatitis? these are all the same symptoms that i get when the skin on my hands are bad, my hands get very itchy, puffy, and extremely sore, but not neccessarily dry at the beginning, and i also get little tiny white bumps between my fingers. Try some aqueous cream to wash with and some good quality hand cream, if this doesnt help then see your gp.

RubberDuckWithCranberrySauce · 16/12/2006 09:30

Thanks guys - yes I'll mention it to the homeopath next time I see her - never crossed my mind it might be relevant until I worked out when the last time it happened was.

Could also be dermatitis related - seems such a weird tiny place to get it though! Very odd!

It's not really such a wierd place to get it, not considering your hands are a part of your body that are exposed to a great deal of things.

RubberDuckWithCranberrySauce · 16/12/2006 09:38

I suppose not - but I can't think of what would have been exposed to that tiny patch and not the rest of my hands!

i know it seems strange but i have none of this on any part of my body ONLY on my hands, i treated it purely as dry skins for 18 months (i had carpal tunnel and that is one of the symptoms)it was only that my fingers started to split that i wne to gp and he said it was dermatitus

corrina28 · 16/12/2006 09:56

and i only have it on certain fingers (index and middle fingers on both hands and little patch on one thumb)

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 16/12/2006 09:57

I get hives purely as a reaction to the cold - chilblains too - could it be a chilblain? They feel quite lumpy and can crack?

foxinsocks · 16/12/2006 19:52

I get a very similar thing (in fact, I have it at the moment). I mentioned it to the doctor when I was there for something else and they checked my blood for rheumatoid arthritis because the lumps were next to a few joints on my fingers (also same fingers each time!).

Nothing showed in my blood but I'm supposed to be keeping an eye on it (and have, of course, totally forgotten about it till now).

I would think that it could be related to the homeopathy - I initially thought mine was an allergic reaction because the lumps were v similar to hives (but were harder and hung around a bit longer).
