Miaou's pointless poll of the day - Have you ever fainted?

Miaou · 11/12/2006 09:33

I've lost consciousness a couple of times, but always "come to" before I hit the deck - never actually gone out cold. Just wondered how common it is really!

I don't think I've ever totally fainted. have had near misses (generally while pregnant) but never actually got as far as collapsing.

My sister on the other hand has fainted many times.

colditz · 11/12/2006 09:35

yes, only once. I stood up to show my textiles teacher something and woke up with a ring of faces round me. Lack of food.

BettySpaghetti · 11/12/2006 09:36

No, but like you both, I've come pretty close a few times

sunnywong · 11/12/2006 09:37

yes
once when I was 16 and chosen from the audience at a fete to be sawn in half by a conjourorororor

and every time I had a toke from the ages of 25-28 (about 10 times all up). Had to give it up, what a lightweight.

JARMgotstuckupthechimney · 11/12/2006 09:38

3 times.

First time I was 13

Second and third time both at blood tests in my late teens.

Not a good feeling, especially when you smack your head and feel dizzy and sick for days after!

expatinscotland · 11/12/2006 09:39

Yes.

I fainted after an MMR when I was 18. I got up right away and fainted at the front desk.

I also fainted in a blazing hot gym. I worked out as normal, guess I didn't feel how hot I was getting. Stood up, and fainted.

Miaou · 11/12/2006 09:44

suzywong! What a place to faint!

OP posts:
southeastastra · 11/12/2006 09:46

yes once when i was about 10 in the school dinner queue, and once when i was about 16 queuing in the cinema (on a first date) to watch morons from outer space!

nogoeswithbellson · 11/12/2006 09:47

Yes, first time I was only 8 and sister was changing my earrings. second time I was 13 and cut my head open when I fell, a couple of times having a blood test and three times in a row whilst on a beach in Thailand.

fiiiivemadmarchhaaaares · 11/12/2006 09:47

3 times, all spectacularly

first day on the job as dental nurse, keeled over and wet meself

again when I had a bit of a panic attack going on, fainted and fell down the stairs

and most recently, when having navel piercing. Came to to find everyone laughing because apparently,I farted very loudly.

fao sw, and quite proundly, never from smoking.

justaphase · 11/12/2006 09:48

once - I had flu with the runs so could not eat and was terribly dehidrated and my bp was very low. Happened as I was coming out of the loo. I fell and hit my head and came to from the pain.

Very unpleasant experience.

nogoeswithbellson · 11/12/2006 09:50

Fivemarchhares. How for you! When I fainted on the beach I was convinced I had wet myself I could even remember pulling my bikini bottoms down and doing a wee! But must have been a dream I always have really vivid dreams when I faint.

maltatheterrible · 11/12/2006 09:54

yep, from erm...exhaustion on the weekend I moved in with DH. Blimey that was a long time ago!
I was stood in the kitchen and managed to pull the entire knife rack down on top of me, DP found me in a crumpled heap surrounded by blades, he always said I was a drama queen

Gingerbear · 11/12/2006 09:56

A few times

When I was about 12 and had just started my periods, I used to faint all the time. Once I was having a music lesson, started swaying and the music teacher grabbed the clarinet whilst I fell to the floor.
Then I fainted during a rehersal for 'Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat' I fell off the stage.
At uni, I fainted one morning whilst out walking near Alderley Edge. Fell and split my head on a rock and a Sunday in casualty.
Passed out on the top of Mount Tiede in Tenerife and had a fit apparently. (Scared DH to death)

At the cinema watching Reservoir Dogs, during the ear slicing scenes.

Most recently just after a tetanus vacc. with the nurse at the GP's. (Most embarrassingly I peed myself during that episode)

I have not fainted for about 5 years (touches wood)

Most episodes due to low blood sugar levels or anaemia when periods started.

fiiiivemadmarchhaaaares · 11/12/2006 09:57

Yes, I try to to mention in RL that much

fiiiivemadmarchhaaaares · 11/12/2006 09:57

not to

Gingerbear · 11/12/2006 09:58

I also fainted when I was 16 and had my ears pierced.

ClementClarkeMoore · 11/12/2006 10:00

Never

HumphreyCushiONtheFirstNoel · 11/12/2006 10:00

Travelling home for Christmas from university.
Had all my belongings in two massive suitcases.
Fainted on an escalator going down to a London tube station. Apparently I did a rather impressive forward roll over the top of the suitcases!
Someone pressed the emergency stop button, and I was hauled to the bottom, and propped up against my luggage.
No shame there then!
A very nice London Underground man walked me to the tube and waited with me until the train arrived.
I had been hot, tired and stressed about catching the connecting train from King's Cross.
This was about 15 years ago, and I haven't fainted since - touch wood!

Miaou · 11/12/2006 10:01

Gingerbear (and others) that kind of fits with what I was wondering - some people are "prone" to it I guess?

MerryMegandSnowySoph · 11/12/2006 10:03

fainted first time when I was eight after cutting my knee whilst skipping. Since then a number of times. Feel annoyingly faint all the time with this PG but haven't actually fell yet.

Miaou · 11/12/2006 10:10

Actually, I've just remembered - my mum told me recently that when I was very little I always used to faint every time I hurt myself - so much so that when I started school my mum asked the teachers to keep an eye on me at playtime! But I don't remember fainting at all so I must have been quite young.

Gingerbear · 11/12/2006 10:10

Hmm, maybe Miaou. I think I am better at eating a decent breakfast these days, as I know lack of food is a trigger for me. With the mountain episode, I think it was heat and altitude that caused it.
No idea about the vaccination one, I never normally feel faint with needles.

twoisenoughmum · 11/12/2006 10:10

Only once: I was in a pub at my friend's 24th birthday party, standing at the bar, talking to a man I knew quite well and really, really, really fancied. Knew I was feeling faint and thought "I ought to sit down for a bit" but didn't want to stop talking to this gorgeous bloke. So I went out cold, woke up to see the proverbial "ring of faces" but also with the fingers of a slightly greasy biker type in my mouth. He was making sure I didn't swallow my tongue, apparently.

P.S. I did get the bloke at the bar in the end. Had a very sexy affair over the course of one summer. Sigh.

northstar · 11/12/2006 10:14

Once, I was in my next-door neighbours kitchen and all of a sudden I could see the draining board heading straight for me. I whacked my head off the edge of it and came round on the floor. It was quite a shock.
Another time I was on the beach with ds (1.5 at the time) and thought I was going to faint. It was really scary because there wasn't anyone close enough to help me and he was toddling around.
