WTF is wrong with my ear?

I've had a nasty cold/flu type thing, but am mostly better, just snotty.

But my left ear woke me in the middle of the night. Sometimes when I swallow, it feels like someone's pushing a needle deep into my ear. It also hurts if I burp, yawn or blow my nose (again, only sometimes).

I can hear fine. The pain isn't agony, but it's not nice. Should I take meds for it, if it's still doing this tonight? Do I go see a GP if it gets worse?

(I can still hear out of that ear. My balance is ok.)

Hi, Same sort of thing happending to me... although just a small ache. Am going to do a hopi ear candle treatment - have bought them at health shop before.

Perhaps you have slightly ruptured your eardrum from blowing your nose when you had the flu? Have you read up much about ear pain online?

It's not that bad, it's the waking me up that really has me riled.

Weirdly, I was up at 4 because of my ear. I thought I didn't go back to sleep, just tossed and turned and tried to sort out my ear, but DH said he was up at 3 and 5 with DS2, who had bad dreams or lost his covers or something.

I thought a ruptured ear drum meant I wouldn't be able to hear? I can definately still hear from that ear.

I will have a dig into ear pain. I don't think I want to monkey around with ear candles at this point.

Actually, maybe the pain is a bit better, and I can just ignore the whole thing. I often get a mild case of labyrinthitis after a cold (reasonably strong symptoms, but only lasts about 6 hours or so), so I guess it's not that weird to have my ears affected in another way.

well you could try my onion remedy

maybe your sinsus are abit affected and some salt steam baths for your head could help. Reminds me I need to do it!

oooh, was dying to reply with just"pardon?" but i thought better of it

my ears are my weak point - any bugs go straight there - so you have my sympathies - can be bleedin painful. go and see the docs, could be an infection

I hesitate to ask ... but ... onion remedy?

The pain has cleared up now. I bet lying down was part of the problem, so I'll get it at 4am again tomorrow, with my luck.

It's easy to forget how painful ear pain can be ...

chop up onion, cook for only a short time in abit of water - put onion in a muslim cloth warm and place next to ear.

was recommended by dd doctor for ear infections - helps ease pain and draw out ear mucus
