Has anyone had a Gastroscopy/Endoscopy?

DH has just got an appointment through for next week . Just reading through the notes, it seems like you can either just have your throat sprayed with local anaesthetic or have a sedative injection.

Wondered if anyone had any experience of this.

TIA

Definitely a sedative. He wont remember a thing. Without it, it's hideous. The downside of sedation is that he will need to be accompanied home afterwards.

Thanks for that.

Was thinking that may be the case. I will go with him but i don't drive and i know he will think he will be ok without it.

Will talk him into having the sedative and getting cab back.

hiya , i had this done when i was pg with ds2. i hate to say this but it was not a pleasant experience. they sprayed my throat first with a 'Banana tasting' spray, then they pinned me down whilst they fed the tube down my throat.they did sedate me aswell, but it only came into effect once the tube was actually down. truly horrible experience for me.. i'd rather give birth with no pain relief whatsoever than go thru that again.

DH has had this done three times - first time just the spray. He was in a day ward full of other men all having the same procedure and they were all offered either spray or sedative so I think there was a certain "I'm just as butch as you attitude" after the first one opted for just the spray. He did say it was OK - and he is capable of being a big girl about medical matters. The next one he was having an endoscopy and colonoscopy at the same time so no question went for the sedation. Third one also sedation although milder than the previous one. I would definitely recommend he has sedative. I'm fairly sure they said don't drive for at least 24 hours. DH did have next day off work too.

I've had one and had a sedative - didn't kick in till afterwards and I can't say I enjoyed the experience. I felt very groggy afterwards (when the sedative finally took effect) and got a cab home after 2 hours on the ward. Certainly couldn't have driven until the next day.
