What is this in my mouth?? (Picture)

For a week I've had a very very painful sore throat on my right side. I just left it alone hoping it'd go away but yesterday morning it woke me up and was so painful I couldn't fall asleep again. I then looked in my mouth and saw this, my right tonsil swollen and with some stuff on it.
I'm absolutely freaking out, never had anything like it before. Painkillers just aren't working and I've been gargling with warm salt water. Other symptoms is just that my airways feel a bit more blocked and I'm bringing up mucus.

I really think the stuff on your tonsils is infection. I almost always get it on one tonsil only.

School will be understanding at you needing another day or two off - you sound like you need to stay in bed and let your body recover. Stress and anxiety often present physically when you are run down - infections, bad skin and those grooves in nails are all examples.

Do try to see your GP tomorrow to put your mind at ease or call NHS 24 if you are worried.

Cross post. Good! I am glad you have someone who can help out. It is always feeling ill when you have lots on but worrying makes it worse - viscous cycle.

Just back from the doctors half an hour ago. Managed to get an emergency appointment in the nearest town at 3:15pm. Looked such a mess when I went in, literally jumped out of bed! I was woken at exactly 5:15am with the pain and couldn't fall back to sleep because of it. And I'm a very deep sleeper, I've slept through the fire alarm and my alarms all the time.

Arghh will just have to wait now.

Sounds, and looks, really sore. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Got back about half an hour ago. Was literally 2 minutes in the doctor's office. I started coughing up blood closer to the time. He said it is tonsilitis and has put me on a load of penicillin, 2 tablets 4 times a day and there's 56 tablets altogether!! I'm awful at maths so will need to use a calculator to figure that one out.. but yeah all good I guess.

Not sure if I should go to school tomorrow or not? I really don't want to miss much more as I'm in my final year. My mum said tonsillitis isn't contagious but according to Google it is? Then again, this is the same person who told me I had the 'sore throat everyone's got it at the moment''

No it isn't contagious but you may feel rubbish.

GinAndSonic · 09/11/2015 16:26

As long as you aren't kissimg

GinAndSonic · 09/11/2015 16:27

As long as you aren't kissing, sharing cutlery, food etc, you are fine to go to school. I regularly send my 4 and 6 year old kids to school with tonsillitis and a bottle of penicillin for the school to administer.

PacificDogwod · 09/11/2015 19:55

56 tablets are the equivalent of 7 days treatment - take the whole course even if you feel better before the week is up.

If you don't feel better, get checked for glandular fever. It is a simple blood test and will tell you whether you have glandular fever which is viral or not.
And again, no kissing! It's not called the 'Kissing Disease' for nothing Grin

Hope you feel better soon.

asblackasyoursoul · 09/11/2015 20:47

Hah with my face don't think I'll be kissing anyone Grin

But how long will it start to take to kick in? Also can I take Anadin Extra as pain relief?? It's so sore. And I'm so congested, my voice sounds ridiculous and I'd really like it to be sort of going back to normal by Wednesday! Anything else I can do to speed up the process?

OP posts:
PacificDogwod · 09/11/2015 21:45

Nope. Time and patience and painkillers, I'm afraid.
You'll get there - people usually do.
Biology just Does Not Care how inconvenient illness can be Grin
