Fibroids?

Went to hospital to see if the fibroid that grew in me along with ds2 had shrunk....apparently not and it's 3 cm by 4cm, but stable in size.

Has anyone else got this problem or know anything about it - the gynae said it was quite normal and they wouldn't worry about it unless it got very large. What's large - he was a bit non committal.

I worry about this, but he tells me 40% of all women have one....so ...who else does and what's your thoughts?

I'm pregnant and have a fibroid now. It is really common. They just need to keep an eye on the size. Sometimes the shrink down, and sometimes they grow. If it gets too big they will try to do a D&C on it. My mom had one the size of a grapefruit and ended up with a hysterectamy (back in the 80's, and I'm sure medicine has gotten better since then)

I have fibroids, apparently they grew 8cm in diameter in a year. I am going to see the gynie on the 18th, my GP has warned me that the gynie will discuss hysterectmoy options, however i am not worrying until i see him

I have multiple fibroids - the current set grew again after I had a myomectomy (sp?) nearly 10 years ago. I think MKG is right in thinking medical technology has improved - when I had my fibroid surgery, it was a full-on abdominal operation complete with CS-like scar. I'm sure I read a couple of years back that they can be lasered, or similar, now.
The ones I have now grew very large when I was pg with ds; the last time anyone looked, which was about a year ago, the largest of them was about the size of yours. They don't - at the moment - cause me any problems.

I had a fibroid discovered when I was about 10w with ds1 (and I had been feeling it move around inside me for about a fortnight before then). It was about 8cm at the time, and grew to 9x10x11cm. Gave me a lot of pain but no probelms with labour.

Afterwards it shrank to about 5cm. The gynae warned me against having it removed until I was happy with the size of my family, as there was a risk of bleeding during the op which could lead to hysterectomy. So I left it. But my periods were very heavy.

With dd it grew to about 8cm. Again gave me a lot of pain (more intense this time, but ending sooner - less than 20w) but not probelms with labour. And afterwards my periods were not particularly heavy, perhaps because the fibroid had shrunk.

With ds2 it stayed at about 5cm and didn't grow. Gave me no problems, just the occasional reminder of its presence.

It gives me no problems now, so I'm not doing anything about it.

IIRC a fibroid of this size may be removed by keyhole surgery, rather than by opening up the abdomen. Also that they become increasingly common from about 35y, until by menopause most women will have at least one.

thanks everyone....i have always had very heavy periods, but i know it only grew when i was pg as i had a gynae vaginal ultrasound before i got pg as i was bleeding in the middle of each month and was concerned about fibroids...they didn't find anything, but it was probably just too small to see at that point.

I must admit I don't even really know its there, and my periods are not "that" painful, so I suppose I will just live with it.

He's asked me to make an appointment every 9 monts going forward to have it monitored. SO I guess I am lucky that they are prepared to keep an eye on it.
