Contraception. Help needed with mini pill (progestogen only)

I have not been on the mini pill for 5 years and have forgotten how it works. I went to the doctor for prescription this week and she said to take it from first day of my next period and then I would be protected straight away.

That will not be until the New Year. Can I start it straight away and get protected sooner? I forgot to ask the doctor. I would love not to have to use condoms over Christmas!

The FPA website advises you can start the mini pill at any time in your cycle as long as you're sure you're not pregnant but will need to use another form on contraception for the first two days, If you start on day 1 of cycle this is not neccessary. hth x
