Has anyone had to have root canal repeated years later??

I was at the dentists for the tooth next to it when she said I needed this particular tooth done again because it was no good! She said while I have no symptoms best to leave cus when they go back into it there always a chance of losing it! Which worried me because it's quite near the front....has anyone had to have it re done years later??

Yes, sometimes they re-do an RCT. Usually when you have symptoms though, which you may not get, in which case you probably won't need it doing.

It's normally a v successful procedure IME but can fail; I'm wondering what prompted her to say it was likely to be needed? Did she take any images (x ray?)

She took an x ray of my other tooth which I'm currently having the crown on & said it was fine. Said I needed a crown at some point but wasn't urgent! And just to go for my check up in 6 months, but I decided to have the crown now. When I went last week for my crown prep she mentioned the tooth next to it what I had root canal on years ago needed redoing because it was dead inside or empty or something! But like I say she didn't say anything last time so god knows! ! Do they x ray more than one tooth at a time??
I'd they do why didn't she tell me about it last time.

Yes, typically you can get an image of around 3 or so teeth in an x ray, depending on the dentist's need to know stuff - so unless the tooth is clearly wobbly or cracked or something like that, the most likely thing is that on reviewing the image of the other tooth she noticed the RCT'd one didn't look correct internally and may cause problems in the future.

I don't know much about what a tooth should look like inside on an x ray, but I think this is probably your answer as to why she has mentioned it now.

Yes, me, but after almost 20 years!!

I did sadly lose the tooth eventually after I had several abscesses over a two year period. My lovely dentist sent me to hospital to have it removed as apparently it could have been brittle and difficult to extract after all that time.

Thankfully it was straightforward and I have been back on my 12 month checkup schedule ever since. Only tooth to have given me any bother in 30 years!!

Dentists are robbing charlatans. Imho.
Having had a root canal followed by a crown on a tooth that got infected that then needed extracting, and then being quoted two and a half grand on an implant that is 'desperatly needed''.
Ive lost faith in the proffesion....

Tooth in question is an upper left 6 ie; you cannot see the bugger and I could spend 2500 in so many better ways.

I know whay your saying & I don't sometimes wonder about my dentist as ive got idea what I need n don't need yet I always need stuff doing. Just weird how last time she basically said she you in 6 months... till I decided I was guna have the crown then all of a sudden I need root canal again ffs!! Just don't like thought of a gap

I haven't done anything yet Choc. Mine is unseen. My dentist isn't keen on a bridge because she doesn't want to compromise the two healthy teeth on the other side of the 'hole'.

I need to build up the courage to think about an implant, but, it took 12 months to settle down post extraction to be honest, not that it hurt really once it had gone but if I pressed my jaw from the outside it was sensitive and if I did it on the inside it felt slightly bruised.

We decided to leave it at my last check up, next one isn't for another 10 months. I might be brave enough by then.

My dentist is a lovely woman though - I trust her opinion completely.

So am I right in thinking that if someone has an implant they have to have a gap for a year b4 having it! That seems harsh dunt it.

Would a constant bad taste on my mouth be a symptom of this nackered root canal tooth? ? Ive got this now I'm wondering of its from that..
