CHicken pox vaccination.

Half of dd's class are off sick with chicken pox. When we lived in the states last year dd had the vaccine as she was at school there and it is part of their mandatory pre-school vaccination programme.

Does anyone know if the vaccine is a longterm cover against catching CP or do they require boosters?

If so is it avaliable in the UK?

I thought about getting the vaccine for my dd's but decided against it , as I think that with the vaccine there is a chance of them getting chicken pox as adults, and it doesn't prevent against shingles. If I lived in a country where all kids were given it, I would get it.

This is what worries me, that she will eventually loose immunity and have CP asan adult which can be a lot worse.

I live in the UK but my dad is a paediatrician in the US and my DS has chicken pox at the mo so we've been talking about it. He says they are still deciding whether or not to recommened boosters for it. And I believe there is some concern over whether you are more likely to get shingles as an adult if you get the vaccine rather than the illness.

Having said that, DS's best friend is in hospital with a serious complication from chicken pox (see my other thread).

The little girl I mind had her chickenpox vaccination on Wednesday, she is 14months. GP did it privately. No booster required AFAIK
