my dd aged 3 years has a heavy cold but has also been complaining about tummy ache. She is very uncomfortable and has been writhing about. I have taken her twice to see the doc and they can't seem to suggest anything - any advice??

hi lg, can'r really recommend anything to relieve the tummy ache, but maybe just some children's ibuprofen and a warm water bottle wrapped in a towel? my ds1 (also almost 3) is having the same problem: he came down with a cold last week and still has it and has been complaining about tummy ache. his is so bad that he folds over and screams, while normally he never complains about anything... i haven't been to gp with him, but have surfed around (nhs direct website didn't work because of all the pollonium info?) and found the suggestion that infection with common cold can give tummy ache, when the lymph glands in the abdomen swell.
i hope your dd gets well soon. it's so sad to see them sick and in pain, isn't it?

yes, that happens to me. All my glands swell up quite badly when I am ill (always have done) and GP told my mum when I was little that was the reason why I always got tummy ache and often actually vomit when ill - was because the glands in the stomach have swollen too. Not pleasant, take it from me. Warm hot water bottle helps and paracetamol is about the only thing you can do. Keep her warm and cosy and calm. If she is uptight her tummy may hurt more. hth

My oldest DD suffered from this, she has thankfully grown out of it I think (hope), it's called mesenteric adonitus(sp),we used to use paracetamol/neurofen, a hot water bottle and warm baths. HTH

My ds always suffers from tummy ache with colds and tonsilitis (before he had them removed). It's the first sign we get that he's coming down with something. As others have already mentioned, I give him calpol or nurofen and that usually helps ease it. Hope your dd feels better soon.

There does seem to be a cold bug doing the rounds near us that has a streaming cold AND an unsettled tummy at the same time (ds1 just complained of stomach ache, ds2 was a bit loose) - could it be something similar?

thanks all - I think that it sounds like she has mesenteric adonitus. Unfortunately its her b'day party on friday!!I just hope that the party will take her mind off it. The only thing that seems to settle her now is driving around in the car until she falls asleep. Does anyone know wehn they gorw out of it?

Both my dd's have had this. Dd1 was even admitted to hospital twice with it! She seemed to grow out of it when she was a teenager.
