reflux 9 wks old --- anyone tried infant gaviscon

The back of the box says to use only with dr supervision for under one year olds... Our health visitor mentioned it to us because my 9wk dd sometimes has terrible reflux which makes her quite grouchy (this is my guess). Anyone tried this heartburn medication and what was the outcome? Any bad reactions?

was prescribed for dd at 10 weeks by the hospital. a nightmare to mix up and give if you're bf- we both end up covered in it! - but when she keeps it down, it does the job! she is vomiting much less and putting on weight

i used it for my DS when i was BF and agree with Oliv in terms of it being a nightmare to mix - he had silent reflux - altho' it made no difference. Are you using Infant Gaviscon????

worked for us my lo has been on it since 10 weeks I ff though and I make up feeds in advance and make it all in a big jug with the gaviscon and the formula. I still careful not to overfeed her, ie stop when she had enough rather than try to encourage her to have the extra oz if she has the extra she is almost always sick- she is 6 months and she can just manage a 8oz bottle - and that was a very gradual build up to 8 ozs. I've no problems with it. Tried to stop a couple of times to see if she's okay now but she doesn't enjoy her feeds and will only take about 5 ozs without the infant Gaviscon.

Taylormama --- when you say it made no dif, do you mean it didn't help? What are your DS symptoms of 'silent'... does it wake him up after a little bit of sleeping? Ok sorry so many questions but should I wait to see a doctor before giving it to dd or is it safe enough to experiment with to see if it helps. She just sooo irritable shortly after feeds and throws up so much I figure she is not keeping any in.

My DS tried infant gaviscon when he was about 9 weeks old. Used it for about 2 weeks - didn't make a difference. I think it is the first thing they try with reflux. I think the stronger meds tend to be prescribed by consultants rather than GPs.

My DS also had silent reflux. He rarely puked and didn't show discomfort after feeds etc. He was only really unhappy when we were trying to feed him! As soon as we stopped trying to ply him with milk he was happy as larry! DS has his reflux under control now with LOSEC MUPS.

chickpea - when i said it made no difference i was being neutral as it actually made him worse (didn't want to freak anyone out). Silent reflux symptoms vary but common ones are:
writhing and wriggling when laid flat
back arching and screaming before, during and up to an hour after feeds
hoarse sounding voice
violent hiccups
refusal to feed

Are you self-medicating - have you been to your GP??????? Silent refluxers tend not to vomit (hence silent as reflux is commonly identified by sickness). Please go to your GP if you haven't already. xxxx

no bad reactions it just didnt work! ask for losec/omeprazole (2 names for one thing) or domperidone.

feed in a bolt upright position and keep upright for 30 mins after feed (i normally put ds in his car seat) also raise cot.

are you ff?if so what milk are you using? i tried all the thickening stay down milks to no avail - what did help was switching to cow and gate organic formula.
