9wks old and blood in nappy? or could it still be urates?

Currently debating whether to call the GP. But if they can still get urates at this age I wouldn't worry and wait until tomorrow. He's got no other symptoms indicating an infection at all.

Anyone with similar experience?

how much of it is there? was it in a wet or dirty nappy?

i'm not completely sure they can get urates at this age but i'm far from an expert!

It was just a wet nappy - no poo! There really wasn't a lot maybe a few drops worth it looked like if it was blood.

For some reason I'd thought they only got urates in the nappy when they were really new but now I'm hoping I'm wrong.

can you give nhs a ring and ask their advice?

Was it clearly blood or was it a pinkish smear? If the latter, I have experience of this with ds3 who went to see a paediatrician in the end. It turned out the paed had never seen anything like this before but also, it was not serious (he suggested ds3 might be prone to kidney stones later in life but nothing to worry about now) BTW, my ds3 got these urate stains for at least a year.

If however, you think it is blood, that is different. I would take your ds to the GP in that case.

It wasn't 'clearly' blood because it was quite light so could've been urates or very diluted blood.

Have just changed him again and put him in a real nappy as I've been reading that red urates are a reaction with the fibres in disposibles - anyone know if thta's true? Anyway, hoping next time I change him I'll be able to tell more clearly.

If you get any more of whatever it is, keep the nappy (assuming it is not a pooey one!) and take it for the GP to see. I did this. There was no way otherwise I could describe what was happening and the GP was clearly baffled by it and not about to recognise my description even if I had been able to provide an accurate one. On the basis of one look at the nappy, I got an appt with the paed in the hospital, who, as I have already said, had also never seen this condition before.

BTW, I noticed as ds3 became older that the stains were only apparent when he was somewhat dehydrated. Keeping him well watered seemed to get rid of them altogether. It was easier in those days but now that he is a stubborn 3 yo, it is harder to get him to drink.

Yes we had this, can't remember exact age but definitely older than newborn - I had been discharged by the midwives so would that have been a month or two?

Thanks ladies. I think maybe he was a bit dehydrated as DH wrapped him up a bit too much last night and he was pretty hot when I got him up. Sounds likely it was urates so I'll just keep an eye on him today but stop being so worrisome!
