Hair loss og thinning hair - what actually works?

Am in my mid-40s and have noticed a great deal of hair loss so now have thinning hair, and it is really, really getting me down. Seems like a lot of other Mumsnetters have this problem, so have been reading all the old threads about this. But am curious to see if somebody has new advice - has anybody tried something that actually works??
I have very good experience with using L'Occitane products - Volumizing shampoo and Volumizing conditioner. Together they give my hair visibly more volume. But that is all cosmetic, of course. Does anybody have any tips or new advice with regard to vitamin supplements, medical treatment, massages - anything? There seems to be a lot of quacks out there, happy to sell expensive treatments....

Have you had your iron and thyroid checked just to be sure it's not them. I had a bald patch last year quite a biggish one I'm only 29. I had low iron stores an a borderline uneractive thyroid nothing to act give medication for but because of the bald patch they gave them to me. It grew back but nowt to do with the tablets I don't think cus I didn't take them for long. I wonder of your doctor could help you or theres them hair specialist I've forgot what there called.
