Dental implant and Bone Graft procedure. Tell me about dental implants......

Hi Everyone,

I have got an abscess and dentist has suggested to go for apicoectomy or an implant. I am choosing the implant, however I am abit terrified about the whole procedure. Can someone tell me what your experiences are and how was the bone graft done? did you have surgery from chin to take the bone graft or did you use another material like cow etc to fill in the bone? What was the whole process of getting an implant from Start to finish?? Is it worth it or should I forget this and go for the apicoectomy? Implant seems to me like major surgery and this is making me nervous.

Why do you think you need a bone graft. I have seven implants, did not need this done.

well because tooth has been root canalled twice and also there is an infection now so that makes you lose bone. also the tooth extraction can cause some bone loss. Measles64 did you have an abscess on any of those teeth before the implant?

I had a bone implant or augmentation as they called it on upper front gum. They actually used bovine bone I think rather than take any of mine and it was ground like powder. They mixed it with a sort of mesh thing and then it grows to form bone. I had this under local at the dentists - took about an hour to perform. Had to wait several months before implant to allow bone to establish and be strong enough for implant. Implant also done under local at dentist in about 1 hour. Really, it's fine. Was a little sore after bone graft but bruising and swelling lasted a day or so and they send you home with paracetamol and mouthwash to prevent infection. If you're really nervous can you ask for sedative too to calm you for the procedures?

I would definitely say go for it, it really is not as bad as you might think. Good luck, there really is nothing to be scared about

Had tooth removed and post put in waited three months for permanent tooth in case the first procedure failed, was a bit swollen and sore. I would say go for it. My smile has transformed my face my neighbour said, she is a retired dentist. Just read up on the apicoectomy that sounds far more gruesome and iffy.

Thank you all for your lovely replies, I already feel less nervous????. I didn't want an apicoectomy due to not having a high success rate. Do you think I will need a bone graft or not? The tooth was root canalled twice and has had an infection since 4-5 months

How do you clean your teeth with the implant do you need regular checkups?

I had an abscess followed by several years recurrent infection leading to bone loss. Not sure how quick it happens. Unanticipated does not impact teeth cleaning- looks and feels like normal tooth so clean in the same way as normal
