How long until you're ready for a visit after a general anaesthetic?

DH in hospital today having a small op. He's going in for the op about 1pm and the procedure will take less than an hour.

When do you think he'll be awake enough after the GA for me to visit him do you think?

As soon as they wake him up I would think. I had an op last year under GA & as soon as I woke up they got me eating a sandwich, having a cup of tea etc, they like you up & about straight away. Only thing I noticed was my balance was a bit off for a few hours, but my op was on my eye & my depth perception was affected so other people might not have this.

That soon? Okay good to know. I assumed he would be a bit out of it for a few hours or something.

It varies. After I had my gallbladder out I wasn't with it for about 4 or 5 hours, after my ERPC I was sitting up ready to get the hell out of there pretty much immediately.

He may be a bit stoned for much of the day and may throw up unexpectedly after his next meal, but I'm sure would appreciate you anyway. I've had ops where you're good to be taken home by a responsible adult after 3 hours, if you manage to eat and not puke for 2 hours. My stay was a lot longer - didn't get to go until 10pm...

When I had a knee op under general last year I was in theatre about 11 and going home at 3! Obvs with hubby picking me up as I was a bit woozy and unsure of what was going on! Certainly helped to have a familiar face!

I was up and about within 10 minutes, and absolutely starving.

It is individual, I think, but I'd expect most people are pretty much recovered within an hour.

It varies. I'm rubbish with ga. Had one a few weeks ago and was in recovery room for about 7 hours and not up to much for a while after that. Has he had one before?

Also depends on the level of pain relief. Sometimes the effects hit a little while later. Maybe plan a short visit for early evening. Dh had a ga for wisdom teeth removal and didn't recall my visiting that evening even though he was conscious and eating.

When DH had an afternoon operation I went to see him in the evening, after work. He seemed quite bright and alert. The next day he was sent home and moaned at me that I hadn't visited him in hospital!

really does vary. No way was I ready for visitors an hour later.

And also weeing more or less normally, that's probably more important.

It's an op on his bladder, going through the urethra. So no external wound, but I think they'll judge when he's ready to come home depending on how much blood in his pee.
