How long for calpol to work?

DS (8 months) has just woken, felt a bit warm so i took inner ear temp... results of 3 readings put it between 39.1 and 39.9. He is a cool child normally (36.1) so am obv worried.

I've calpolled - how long do I wait to check it is dropping???

He is very dopey, but not floppy.

aDadOnMumsnet · 17/11/2006 14:21

at least an hour IME

hope he gets better soon

illness round my way too!

totaleclipse · 17/11/2006 14:22

10, not 12

flopflip · 17/11/2006 14:22

Hour max, if not dropped then give ibuprofen. then if still not dropped after that GP. Hope he is better soon.

flamesparrow · 17/11/2006 14:24

Monitor it every half hour. I know when ds had a temperature of 104°F, the hospital told me to give him 1tsp calpol and 1/2 tsp baby ibuprofen which you can use together.

flamesparrow · 17/11/2006 14:29

Will nurofen him now

Keeping record myself here or I'll lose track of times n temps.

39.0 now

The most important thing flamesparrow is that his temp does come down after giving him something. I should really come down to normal but anything under 38 I would be happy with. Mix of brufen and paracetamol together works really well cause they both act in different ways. Is he stripped off to his nappy ? This is really important.

flamesparrow · 17/11/2006 14:50

Yes, he's stripped. Alternating between happy (but sleepy looking) and whimpering snuggling into me

Smells odd too, but they do when they're ill.

cute but worrying. my dd only ever cuddles when she gets her jabs.

flamesparrow · 17/11/2006 15:02

38.9... coming down slowly, but now very restless and whimpery.

DS is a clingy snuggly baby anyway

Just shows he is getting better cause he can concentrate on feeling ill instead of giving into it IYSWIM.

flamesparrow · 17/11/2006 15:10

Erm... he's now laying calm, but with his hand over his eues to block out the light - should i be worrying again?? I hate this.

OP posts:
flamesparrow · 17/11/2006 15:10

eues = eyes

If he is lying flat and you lift his head up and down, side to side, does he cry. do you have a torch. If so shine it in his eyes and see if he really doesn;t like it. Have you stripped his nappy and checked him everywhere for any marks or rashes? These are just pointers to check. I wouldn't be worried but for peace of mind you could pop him down to a gp or a walk in centre ?

flamesparrow · 17/11/2006 15:22

He cried with the head moving... but I think that was just p*ssed off.

Friend just called and he's perked up whilst I've been talking to her. Going to go over there and I know she'll banish me to docs if she is worried too

Always good to have a less attached opinion!!

Thank you for being here n talking to me flopflip - its helped.

no worries, let me know x

CorrieDale · 17/11/2006 15:28

40 mins so the NHS direct nurse said to me yesterday. Hope he's feeling better FS.

BTW, look for cold hands & feet, mottling limbs and sore legs. Those are the very first signs of meningitis - they come way before the rash & aversion to light.

flamesparrow · 17/11/2006 18:19

DS always has freezing cold hands and feet with a temp

His temp seemed to go down, and he has been fairly chirpy - just woken now so will take again (due next dose of calpol).

37.2 - still up for him but much more normal... he's miserable again now which is always a better sign!
