To ask why people don't vaccinate their DC even though we know that it doesn't cause Autism?

www.thespainreport.com/16953/six-year-old-boy-with-diphtheria-in-catalonia-dies/

A 6 year old boy in Catalonia has died of Diphtheria. Why are people still anti-vaccinations?

Why? My SIL has not and is not vaccinating her DS. He's 14 months now and MIL is so worried.

Mesh mum, well you're never going to prove a negative are you.

That's a bit like saying. This is my child who didn't die in a car crash because we bought a Volvo/Saab instead of a reliant robin.

BertrandRussell · 30/06/2015 19:27

"That's a bit like saying. This is my child who didn't die in a car crash because we bought a Volvo/Saab instead of a reliant robin"

Yep. This is my child who didn't die because we put her in a car seat. This is my child who didn't die because he was vaccinated against polio.

tomatodizzymum · 30/06/2015 19:33

I think this is the one true first world problem. I don't live in the UK, I don't know anyone here in Brazil that doesn't vaccinate, it's not third world but people are not willing to run any unnecessary risks with their children. I know three UK friends that haven't vaccinated their children. Their reasons are to do with the ingredients in the vaccines, they are privileged enough to live in a country where they can do that, I don't and I don't think it's a particularly smart decision to make but they made it! It's just a place we just agree to disagree.

specialsubject · 30/06/2015 19:44

it is indeed a first world problem.

anyone unvaccinated should not go to the non-first world -so make sure you don't take your kids on exotic holidays and that they know the situation before they head off on their gap year to Do Good For Two Weeks In An Orphanage. (or whatever)

because the people they meet and may give the disease too will not have travel insurance to medevac them to help.

Wideopenspace · 30/06/2015 19:49

I'm wondering if any of the non vaccinators would give their children jabs to go abroad?

To prevent things like yellow fever etc.

abearcalledpaddington · 30/06/2015 20:04

I have been to india with my then 3 unvaccinated children :-)

Wideopenspace · 30/06/2015 20:06

So I'm assuming you didn't get the usual 'abroad jabs' either? (as you say they were u/v)

SideOfFoot · 30/06/2015 20:11

At least giving my child a travel vaccine would be to the benefit of my child. The rubella vaccine is not.w

Wideopenspace · 30/06/2015 20:19

Side - would you say your child benefited from others being vaccinated whilst in your womb?

bruffin · 30/06/2015 20:22

Rubella vaccine is if benefit to your child. Why are you in denial that there is a risk from the natural disease. The risk of the vaccine is lower than the risk of the disease.

SideOfFoot · 30/06/2015 20:43

Wide, yes from me .

bruffin, I don't care what the risk of the disease is compared to the vaccine, I'm not happy consenting to letting someone else stick a needle into my child to stop them passing a disease to someone else. I'm happy if my child consents themselves when they are older.

tomatodizzymum · 30/06/2015 20:51

My friend has traveled to Jamaica and here to Brazil with her unvaccinated child. I kept my mouth shut when he got every cold and stomach bug going, remembering her speech about how vaccines weaken their immune system. She certainly realised that having a dehydrated child with a fever in 40 degree heat is a lot more dangerous than having a fever or getting dehydrated in a temperate climate! And that was just for a common cold, imagine something more serious? Going abroad unvaccinated is very like not using a car seat. You're playing Russian roulette.

FuzzyWizard · 30/06/2015 21:00

Going unvaccinated to developing countries is so much more risky than any vaccine. I just feel really Confused that any one would choose to do that. I'm assuming you made that decision for a reason abear... were you in a particularly low-risk and affluent part of India? Is there a reason why vaccines are particularly dangerous for your children?

MehsMum · 30/06/2015 21:04

Mesh mum, well you're never going to prove a negative are you.

That's a bit like saying. This is my child who didn't die in a car crash because we bought a Volvo/Saab instead of a reliant robin.

But that's the problem: none of us knows if we still have our DC because of vaccination, or improved sanitation, or any of those things. Therefore it's possible for people to, frankly, delude themselves, and decide their baby doesn't need the vaccine against polio because nobody gets it now. Or that a rubella vacc is pointless.

As Side says, you can't prove a negative. But when deciding whether or not to vacc a baby, it's an issue it might be wise to think about. The crushability of certain makes of car is why parents decide now is the time to get a Volvo. So why not vaccinate the children too?

Cherriesandapples · 30/06/2015 22:34

Hmmm, still waiting for The Lancet article.

Thick and selfish, I repeat!!

DanaBarrett · 01/07/2015 12:54

Suspect you'll be waiting a while for that article given I couldn't find it in either the Lancet or the Lancet Infectious Diseases.....

specialsubject · 01/07/2015 14:28

so we have 'I went to a country where people die regularly of these diseases. I took my children who are too young to make their own decisions. They weren't vaccinated so I put them at risk AND the locals. And I end this with a smile'

wow. Just wow. Because what I really want to say will get me banned.

Pride in ignorance. Shocking.

BertrandRussell · 01/07/2015 14:41

I think [http://nsnbc.me/2015/06/19/shocking-report-from-medical-insiders/ this]] might be the Lancet article in question. Interesting that the well known pro vaccine Big Pharma shill Ben Goldacre has been writing and talking about this for some years now...........

BertrandRussell · 01/07/2015 14:42

proper link

chiruri · 01/07/2015 15:34

I don't understand how that article could possibly be used in conjunction with support of AW, seeing as he has a documented financial conflict of interest through support of the separate MMR vaccines. It actually supports rigorous scientific methods in research - much of which supports vaccination!

BertrandRussell · 01/07/2015 15:44

I don't either. But it was posted on Facebook by a friend of mine who is an anti vaccination. juice Plus distributor who thinks that you can cure cancer by giving up sugar, thinking positively and eating a lot of coriander......

DanaBarrett · 01/07/2015 20:50

Worked for my friend, Bertram, oh wait, it didn't.....

Well, Ben Goldacre and anti-vaxxers on the same side, this should be interesting...

bumbleymummy · 13/07/2015 21:59

chiruri, when the 'Wakefield' press conference took place the single measles vaccine was still available on the NHS.

Good article. Not really surprising though.
