2 weeks old and a blocked nose

I hope someone can help.

My 2 week old baby son has a blocked up nose. He was a bit tetchy yesterday and the blocked up nose developed during the night. I've been up all night with him because as a first time mother I'm a little paranoid anyway and also because he sounds so helpless.

Any suggestions on what to do?

Well a good tip at night..if he is in a cot..is to roll up a couple of towels and put them under the actual mattress which helps keep his little head up a bit which helps to unblock it.
You can get nasal drops too to help clear his nose...have a look in your local pharmacy

It's really gross, and your baby will HATE it, but you can get those bulb sucky things, which I would occasionally resort to, to clear nostrils.

You suck it out. But there is something hugely satisfying about it when you clear it...

Or saline drops which you can use on babies so small.

When my DS had this as a baby we were advised to fill a bath with hot6 water and sit i the bathroom with him as the steam would clear his nose......

Also we used to nasel drops on a hankie and just used to wave it in front f his face for very short periods of time.

Saline drops. My DD got a cold at 4 days thanks to her germy 6 year old (as was at the time) brother.

He will by fine as long as he keeps feeding normally.. don't panic.

Saline drops, bulb syringe, also, wrap up warm and take outside - cold moist air is a great liquifier!

obviously not for too long as only 2 weeks!

Thanks everyone. He obviously believes in feeding a cold and starving a fever as he is feeding very well.

Am preparing myself to suck it out as can't get out for drops or bulb.

My DD got the same around this age. Take DS into the bathroom with you in a bouncer when you have a shower. The warm moist air will help clear his nose. Incidentally the syringe thing really hurts, my GP wont hear of anyone using one.

If you have a decongestant inhaler you could also disolve a few drops in warm water and place them in a large venitlated room. As at this age it;s really too strong, but if you did it like this it should be weak enought to help but not harm.

Also a bowl of water under the radiator works as a really good humidifier if you have'nt got one.
