faking illness is the only way to go, i said i would do some research on the net as my suggestion of smallpox didnt go down too well.

can anyone help with a not so serious people are worried enough to go round but too bad and contageous for her to spend the day with bickering family disease please?

norovirus - closes whole hospital wards. Nobody would want to be near and a decent recovery period.

Would have to look thin for a bit afterward so not a good one if she's having a big Christmas - just not with them.

Or she could work providing Christmas lunch for the homeless in a mission or something.

I'd go for tonsilitis, it's infectious but not terrble or life threatening and easy to put on.
