I have just been to GP who has diagnosed a kidney infection. No preceding water infection just onset of pain last night, which has got worse and worse as they day has gone on. Am in agony and chemist has left painkillers out of my prescription in error

I'm feeling sorry for myself so I thought i'd share in my misery.......

DH had one last year and was miserable - my sympathy
The antibiotics sorted him out and was feeling brighter after 2 days and better after a week.

hav eyou painkillers in the house?

i would say paracetamol, definitely not ibuprofen

VeniVidiVickiQV · 03/11/2006 17:32

thank you...

I have paracetamol but it hasnt been touching it. GP prescribed Ibuprofen - highest dose, and co-dydramol (which i take anyway for my back and my migraines). And some HUGE antibiotics.

Poor you, I had one about 10 years ago, and was so sick with it. Can remember it to this day.

Hugs to you and drink plenty of water.

twelveyeargap · 03/11/2006 18:00

Poor you. I had one when i was three and I still remember the trauma of it. The antibiotics should work fairly quickly. Can you phone the pharmacy and have the rest of the scrip sent over? What time do they close?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 03/11/2006 18:00

Thank you

am starting to feel a little better already for sitting down and taking the ibuprofen. I've got to get up and make dinner - DP stuck in non-moving traffice and car broken down

OP posts:
VeniVidiVickiQV · 03/11/2006 18:01

They close at 7pm but see post below about DP having broken down...

Bugger. Would it be outrageous/ feasible to call a cab to collect them and tell pharmacy a cab driver will pick up? Would be worth it if it's not hideously expensive.

Ask DH to pick up some Cranberry juice on his way home. It's excellent for your urinary tract. A urologist I worked with advised it for all his patients.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 03/11/2006 20:16

DP managed to get there just in time - 2 minutes to closing. I rang 3 cab companies - one wanted to charge £10, the other £7-8 and the last one £4 but couldnt get anyone there for 15 mins and it was 6.55pm at that point. The chemist rang me to ask what was happening, and was considering dropping it off for me or taking it home so DP could collect it from her which I thought was rather nice. They are adamant that they put them in the bag. Im sure they didnt, but heyho - i have them now and the ibuprofen is doing its job atm.

Will get some cranberry juice tomorrow. Have done this before when I've had cystitus - it really is good stuff isnt it?

Elibean · 03/11/2006 20:42

You poor love - my neice had one recently, and was in agony. Bummer the painkillers got left out, really hope the antibiotics kick in fast.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 03/11/2006 21:49

Thanks Elibean.....

Painkillers have worn off a bit and I cant take anymore for 2 hours

VVV I spent the millenium New Years Eve with one of these

It is pretty grim, isn't it? I found the anti biotics worked pretty fast, though, and the pain was manageable with a hot water bottle and low moaning

VeniVidiVickiQV · 03/11/2006 22:26

Yes, the low moaning has been quite effective.

As has the holding my breath, and the sobbing like an idiot in front of the GP, and then in the street on teh phone to DP

DP was supposed to be getting me a hot water bottle but i think he has been waylaid by his computer.....

I think i might take some more ibuprofen anyway, pain is increasing steadily.

FrannyonFire · 04/11/2006 07:40

How are you this morning VVV?

A hot bath might be effective if you still haven't got the hot water bottle...

Have the antibiotics started working yet?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 04/11/2006 21:41

In much less pain today, thank you for asking

Feel mysteriously exhausted though and have slept most of the day. Mind you the co-dydramol probably help with that too.

Still puzzled as to how I could get a kidney infection without symptoms of a UTI first.

OP posts:
twelveyeargap · 06/11/2006 10:14

Glad you're feeling better. Kidney infections can just come on like that. You don't have to have a UTI first. It can be a bacterial infection that just attacks the kidneys, afaik.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 06/11/2006 21:27

Thank you! Am a little concerned - have started another thread in Health about the long term effects of pre-eclampsia.

I'm hoping I'm just being paranoid
